Restaurants Around The Country

Mary Mac’s Tea Room in Atlanta proper. It’s a throwback serving southern comfort food. It began in the post-war period of the late forties. White folks patronized Mary Mac’s, and a few blocks away, there was a remarkably similar place serving “patrons of color.” Enforced segregation is gone, and Mary Mac’s serves everybody these past decades. Enter, and you are welcomed and seated. You’re given a pencil and a paper form upon which you write down what you’d like to have. You’re served and looked after. If a certain old soul is there, you might get a back rub while you’re waiting on you vittles. Years ago, I was married there. That’s a story for another time and thread.

Hmmm, I was married in the basement of an office building under a basket ball goal.. Also years ago.

I've had my share of BBQ. There were two excellent joints in Abilene in my time at ACU in the 80's. Harold's (Hickory) and Joe allen's (Mesquite). Harolds was more of a dive. Concrete block, picnic tables, old style coke dispenser, bbq sauce in tupperware marked with sharpies, sweet water cornbread, and out of site peach cobbler. You could get sliced or chopped, and either was done upon ordering off the ham. Max moistness. Joe allens could do chicken breasts that melted in your mouth and steaks so thick you couldn't order them till after 5.

The only place I've been since that is top quality and consistent is Southern Pit BBQ in Griffin, GA. And the holidays are a treat when you can place your order for smoked turkey's, ducks, goose, and pheasant.

Edit: Harold's closed in 2011 and the owner/founder enventually passed in 2016. Some of the best BBQ that ever graced West TX, and as I remember from my 2 years there and several dollars spent with him, he was an incredible person.

Anyone familiar with WAWA’s knows they have a great 24 kitchen. Excited that we will be getting these in Florida.

My favorite pizza place when I lived in NY. “Pizza Plus” in Brooklyn. They had the best pizza I’ve ever eaten. They also had really great Italian plates, like Chicken parmesan or marsala, and my daughter really liked their subs. I’m glad Covid didn’t destroy them, like several other small businesses in the area.

Have to try this place next time I’m up in New York. Always on the hunt for the best pizza.

Definitely! I make sure I go there whenever I visit. There’s also “John’s Pizzeria” in Times Square. Their pizza is not as good as Pizza Plus, but they have excellent garlic knots, antipasta, and they had pretty cheap pitchers of beer (at least, it was pretty cheap before Covid. I haven’t been there since like 2019).

“Donuts & Diner,” on the same road as Pizza Plus. A great breakfast/lunch place, and always has donuts to go. Cash only, or at least it used to be.

Just looked at a bunch of photos and reviews, looks incredible.

Giovanni’s Brooklyn Eats” is an excellent Italian restaurant. I just read that they are closed for repairs after a kitchen fire though. Scary.

If you are ever in Park Slope Brooklyn, send me a message and I’ll give you a few more restaurants to try (and avoid) in the area. So many good ones on 7th Avenue.

Okay, two more I have to mention. “Zatar” has some of the best burgers and fries I’ve ever eaten. Their flatbread pizza is delicious as well.

And just 2 blocks away, “Flora,” which is very expensive, but it was an excellent brunch spot. I really liked their prosciutto sandwiches.

One of the very rare positives of Covid in Brooklyn, NY was the development of outdoor dining. After months of the streets being like ghost towns in the area, when things started reopening in late summer, early fall, restaurants went all out in creating beautiful outdoor dining environments. They are still very popular today.

“Player’s Grille”

A bar with a few locations in Jacksonville. This restaurant just replaced my favorite restaurant that went out of business. I went the Player’s last night, and it was acceptable. It’s a nice little bar with a decent tap selection and typical bar food. We shared potato skins, garlic knots, and spicy wings. The garlic knots were dissapointing, but the wings and skins were very good. I got the grilled chicken sandwich as my entree, and it was not very good. Extremely bland, as were the sauteed veggies that came with it. If the would just season the chicken with salt and pepper before throwing it on the grill, it would fix the problem.

Overall, it will be a good place to watch ballgames on Saturdays every once in a while, but the food is a secondary reason to go there. I’ll get the pizza next time. After all, it replaced an excellent pizza restaurant. If their pizza is really good, that’ll improve my opinion of it a whole lot.

If you are in downtown Tampa you gotta try their pizza.

The iconic crust has been attributed to the minerals in the New York water that pizzaiolos use to make the dough. Eddie & Sam's N.Y. Pizza imports New York waters in order to bring authentic New York pizza to our Florida family.
