That's right. Citizens of the Confederate States of America were Americans just as citizens of the United States of America were.
What you're history professors failed to teach you was prior to the Civil War and the massive expansions of federal powers the average joe/jane would have identified themselves as Tennesseans, New Yorkers ext before they would have as Americans. Peoples loyalties lay with there state before the federal government. Until Lincoln the federal government was pretty constrained in what it could regulate and influence within the states.
Even now neither you nor I should feel any loyalty to the federal government, we should only feel loyalty to our fellow countrymen and the constitution.
