That's right. Citizens of the Confederate States of America were Americans just as citizens of the United States of America were.

What you're history professors failed to teach you was prior to the Civil War and the massive expansions of federal powers the average joe/jane would have identified themselves as Tennesseans, New Yorkers ext before they would have as Americans. Peoples loyalties lay with there state before the federal government. Until Lincoln the federal government was pretty constrained in what it could regulate and influence within the states.

Even now neither you nor I should feel any loyalty to the federal government, we should only feel loyalty to our fellow countrymen and the constitution.

I figured he would pick it up. He was saying the confederates weren't Americans, I was simply pointing out America was in the name.

This isn't entirely true. Research a little further. What really led up to the civil war was Tarrifs placed disproportionately on the south with the overwhelming majority of the money going back to and benefiting northern states. Succession had been brewing for decades. South Carolina had even gone as far as to rule independently the tariffs went to far and thus couldn't be enforced.

They seemed to create a huge fuss of black people not being equal for it not being the sole reason, and they added language protecting slavery in their constitution.

Alexander Stephens (CSA VP): “Our new government’s foundations are laid, its cornerstone rests, upon the great truth that the negro is not equal to the white man.”
