I don’t know why people get hung up on the word traitor. All traitors are not equal. You have the Benedict Arnold type of traitor (bad) and you have other “ traitors” such as
The founders: traitors to the English crown, loyal to the Revolution
Confederates: traitors to the Union, loyal to their state
David Farragut: traitor to Tennessee but loyal to the Union
The Free French Army: traitors to the Vichy, loyal to a French Republic free of Nazi control
Dietrich Bonhoeffer: traitor to Nazi Germany, loyal to a Germany that didn’t murder Jews and his religion.
It’s a very tricky word to me that doesn’t necessarily connotate some sort of malfeasance. There has to be a better word.
