Richmond is taking down Confederate statues: Is this the end for other Confederate memorials?

I haven’t come across a statue of him yet.
And you won’t. I’m ok with them taking down the Forrest statue because he was an a-hole too and it was put up by Democrats wanting to celebrate him. My point was you could say the “net negative” comment about tons of people but how many protestors would say that about Floyd or Brooks or any violent criminal

That’s not the issue though. Floyd was killed by police. Essentially murder by government. It should piss us all off.

So their values are based on a hatred of Italians?

That racist Lincoln!

Lincoln actually was a racist. He's on record saying blacks were an inferior race. The Emancipation Proclamation got him a lot of love, but he didn't believe blacks were equal. He was more focused on preserving the Union than he was ending slavery.

Isnt that what happened with the civil war? The overzealous government (Lincoln) shot a whole bunch of people for resisting an unlawful (see at least 1 supreme court case) arrests. All the while he took special powers beyond his scope to maintain "order" just like the cops do now.

As if that mattered. If you dont like racists why are the Democrats still in existence?

These far left idiots just want to erase all of history....

I guess you missed the point. The post I responded to acted as if Lincoln was not a racist when he clearly was. I would guess the majority of whites at the time felt that way regardless of their views on slavery simply because white and black were seen as different species(or whatever word would be appropriate) by most. There was not a uniform belief that we're all human. People tend to forget the ignorance of the past. So much of what we know now, wasn't known then. The mindset of society wasn't even close to the mindset of society today.

Just as a comparison, Darwin published On the Origin of Species a mere 2 years before the Civil War. The lens of time distorts a great many things. What seems obvious today was not so obvious 200 years ago. It's part of why I believe we are not responsible for the sins of those who came before us, just as those in the future should not be responsible for our sins today. You learn from the past and try to do better.

Lincoln believed blacks were human. He alluded to their God given rights under the Consitution in many speeches.

If all Lincoln cared about was preserving the Union he could have done that by not coming out against slavery or walking it back after elected. Lincoln wanted a slave free union.
