Richmond is taking down Confederate statues: Is this the end for other Confederate memorials?

I am in no way suggesting that we erase the history books. Just the opposite in fact.

I simply wish we'd stop honoring those who don't deserve to be honored.

"Deserve" is a matter of opinion. Robert E. Lee must have deserved to have a statue, else it wouldn't be there. Opinions vary, you have one based on your education and experience...which is different than those that erected the statue. You assume yourself to be a superior judge of right and wrong but you cannot place yourself in the mind of others from another time.

Let me ask you a question man. It really changed my perspective on history when I was asked this question.

If you were a German teenager when Hitler took power, you would have been a Nazi, statistically speaking. And not like a going through a motions Nazi... Like a true believer Nazi.

Have you ever tried reading history from the perspective of the perpetrators? It's a good exercise in humility and the dark places your mind can go. Not about "people" because of course they can be evil, but yourself.

Just a thought. I bring it up because I think there is a disconnect between reading history as an observer and a judge. I don't think it is a useful intellectual exercise to read history as a judge. I think any middle schooler can sit atop the moral framework our culture stumbled blindly into for thousands of brutal, malevolent years and say what is right and what is wrong.

I hear you, but a nation that knows better does not need those people on pedestals.

The news media and academics have made Martin Luther King JR into the image of Moral uprightness and truth. A true man of God. Someone that should be held in the highest regards by people all over the world.

But the truth about MLK is a lot different. The FBI has tapes of King in hotel rooms with Prostitutes. King is on those tapes saying some of the most despicable things a man can say about women.

Should his statues be removed?

I think there were heroic things about Jackson's life, his policies regarding Native Americans were not heroic. I don't want to see anyone tear down the Hermitage. It seemed like you were defending his policies regarding Native Americans based on your response to the question about the Indian Removal Act.
I didn't mean to imply that Indians should have been killed, but I'm sure they would defend their land, and it got them killed by a superior force. I just watched Marshall Dillon and Chester kill a few that attacked settlers.

They would have to change the names of 955 streets too.

You attack President Jackson as an evil man, which he was not. Only people like you, the British and murdering savages consider him to be so.

I forgot to mention that at the Indian battle in Alabama, one of the soldiers under Jackson's command was Sam Houston.

I will say this. Fellow Tennessean Davy Crockett, who fought under Jackson against the Indians, became a little disenchanted with Jackson's total war policy against Indians.

Later, when Crockett ran for reelection to congress, he severely criticized Jackson's Indian removal policy. Crockett lost the election.
You should probably stick to copy and pasting articles. This is the wackiest **** I have ever seen.

I agree to some extent, but is a statue meant to be a "historical record" or an honor?
That is the million dollar question. Cop out answer is it depends on the statue.

In a perfect world we would have enough historical bandwidth to honor the good and disregard but remember the bad for all noteworthy historical figures.

I lived in Charlottesville when the retards descended on that town. It was then I realized from a bipartisan view that was never going to happen.

move them off public property - seems like a simple solution so I know it won't happen

I disagree with this on a personal level... But I can't really dispute your point considering, like I said, I was there when those retards came and ****ed up our town to protect a statue.

Should all streets, schools and memorials named after Malcom x be changed?

A controversial figure accused of preaching racism and violence, Malcolm X is a widely celebrated figure within African-American and Muslim American communities for his pursuit of racial justice. He was posthumously honored with Malcolm X Day, where he is commemorated in various cities across the United States. Hundreds of streets and schools in the U.S. have been renamed in his honor, while the Audubon Ballroom, the site of his assassination, was partly redeveloped in 2005 to accommodate the Malcolm X and Dr. Betty Shabazz Memorial and Educational Center.
