Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

Why do you care so much about the money? You would really rather risk a Forbes hire (who really tore it up at Wake Forest this year by the way) just to save the athletic department some money? Are you happier paying 2.5 million for 16 wins instead of 5 million for 25? Cause that would be more wins per dollar spent
Not at all the school can continue making as many bad choices as it wants. My point is if you are getting paid with the best you need to beat the best. Does Cal get paid what he does for seasons like this year? How about coach K? Looking at Barnes overall body of work not just TN he is not a good enough coach to get what he is being paid. He misses expectations and does not bring championships.

A raise he did not deserve if your expectations are championships
The administration had to choose between him and other. They clearly thought other wasn't as good as him. It's easy to "demand" championship pedigree coaches. Hell of a lot harder to sign them. Barnes is a top tier coach. A HOFamer.

Im not demanding a championship pedigree coach, im just saying we arent getting our moneys worth for what we are paying what we got.

Let's throw an inflation factor into this equation.

If UT opened the door next month and offered $6.5 M for a new basketball coach, would we get some high caliber coaches interested?

I think we could get some high level interest at 6.5-7M that would get us similar if not better results for the program.

We’re a football school that can’t even attract a name football coach throwing around Saban money, and you think we’d get a name basketball coach just like that?

I’ll have some of what you’re smoking.

When the he!! has Tennessee ever had a championship men’s basketball program? Now, yes, we’d all like to see it get there, but it never has been that in any way, shape or form. In fact, it has been downright abysmal more than it has been even “good.”

The way you win championships is through recruiting. And that has to be, and is being, built. All you have to do is RATIONALLY look at the progression to date:

1. Barnes comes into an embarrassing, raging dumpster fire six seasons ago. 5-star recruits? Bwahahaha! Wouldn’t even give UT a sniff.

2. So he recruits some diamonds in the rough, develops them and wins a regular season championship, which doesn’t happen very often at UT. Look at our history.

3. He is now starting to reel in the 4 and 5-star recruits. Another thing that hasn’t happened very often at UT.

I would be very disappointed to not be able to see where this uptick in recruiting can take this program.

Plus, we’ve seen how well changing coaches has helped “elevate” various programs at UT. A change would much more likely end with basketball descending in the SEC standings as opposed to ascending. And your suggestion that a 6-16 coach at Wake Forrest is the answer makes you lose all credibility.

Tennessee fans really are a miserable “glass is half empty” bunch. It is maddening.

To continue. Since 1970 (50 years):

6 SEC regular season titles
1 SEC tournament title (41 years ago)
21 NCAA tournament appearances (less than 50%)
7 NCAA Sweet Sixteens
1 NCAA Elite Eight
0 NCAA Final Fours

And that’s it.

Everyone would have an elite coach if it were as simple as throwing money around.

Once again Tennessee has over paid for a mediocre coach. NO championships here. He is regular season Rick same as always. Patrick Ewing has a conference tournament championship before regular season Rick could get one here. They should have let him go to UCLA.

I want to know who this elite coach is? We had the coach of the year a few years back, and Barnes is definitely up with the best. If they are talking about Pearl, he's not even playing right now because of cheating. We don't need any more of that.

Today’s Big East is on par with the SEC in your opinion? Just trying to gauge what we are working with.

Trivia: Who was the last UT men’s basketball coach to win an SEC tournament?

These fools think UT could get Izzo to leave Michigan State just by throwing big money at him. It would be more productive to argue with a brick wall. This place used to have lots of intelligent debate about the basketball program. But most of those people don’t post here anymore.

Great thing you’re not in charge

The Big East was awful this year. It’s highly likely they won’t have a single team get past the first weekend of the tournament. And they might struggle to have any team even win a game.

Yes, and I really love the cherry picking. Ewing goes a very mediocre 12-12 in that league...somehow catches lightning in a bottle in the conference tournament...and now he is a measuring stick.

Let me be clear that I am not clamoring for Forbes to be here.
But, the fact that you are judging a guy’s coaching acumen and potential by his first year with WF after taking over a moribund program in historically the toughest league in the country, in the middle of a pandemic with restrictions on team meetings and practices is beyond ridiculous.

Like legit, who said anything about Izzo? Or is that your own hyperbole and conflation of arguments?
