Rick Barnes discussion [merged]

What’s getting it done in March? NCAAT every year, S16 or better every other? 1/3 years? 1/4 years?
Actually winning the tourney in Nashville when youre a top 4 seed. Not consistently under performing your seed your entire 30 year career. If youre a high seed an EE at least once a decade, a FF once a decade. S16 at least at a 3 out of 5 tournament trips. The big one is not underperforming your seed which Barnes has done 3 times

Good news. Next year is just Year 7 of Barnes, so by your metrics he can still meet most of those requirements you laid out before he hits the decade mark.

Look at his career, not happening. Espically the not underperforming your seed. Hes already done that 3 times.

Listen, I’m not going to sit here and say Barnes is going to turn things around. It’s hard to say. But, as disappointed as I am in this performance this year, look at the rest of the NCAA’s top teams.

Iowa, Ohio State, Illinois, Oklahoma State, etc. All teams more favored to win the entire thing than us and all “underperformed” their seed this year. Is there really any difference in the Round of 32 or 64? Not much.

In 2019, IMO, it took an epic screw job by the officials to rip an Elite 8 from that team. And, in the first two years, Barnes took over a mess of a program thanks to Tyndall. It’s not fair to judge anything until Year 3 really.

I’m not trying to blow smoke after what happened this year. This year was undeniably a complete failure. But, Barnes
turned this program around in a hurry and I think he has at least bought enough goodwill that he should at least get 1 more year to win something meaningful rather than judge him on the undeniably strangest season in all of college basketball’s history.

Underperforming the seed or were over seeded? I’m sure that the bashers would be thrilled if TN was in the First Four every year and never gets to the 2nd weekend.

A bunch of miserable, whiny, ill-informed fake fans have taken over the Basketball Forum.

I thought the football forum was bad but this is taking it to a whole another level.

Sitting Grant Williams in overtime didn’t help much either lol

But its not just this year thats been my point. Barnes has been in the game 30 years which is why I keep trying to point that out. He is what he is and thats not very good in March. I could make a $$ bet today on Barnes that as long as he is at TN, the things I mentioned will never happen and feel pretty damn good about winning it.

I mean we can fire Barnes if you want, but there’s not a coach out there that’s a sure fire upgrade who would be guaranteed to come here. At that point, you’re rolling the dice unnecessarily and you might even get results worse than we have now.

This isn’t college football. The NCAAT is its own unique beast and there are no good tournament coaches and bad tournaments coaches. It’s all a crapshoot no matter what anyone tells you. Look at all the great coaches who haven’t won anything worth a damn.

I’ll take the known over the unknown which is consistently being in the Top 4-5 of the SEC. Making the tournament every year. And, potentially having one magical season when the pieces click together which is more than most coaches ever get.

In the last few years Barnes has been a regular in the SECT semis, had TN ranked #1 for a month, won a conference championship, was a lucky bounce and a questionable foul away from a couple of Elite Eights, and is signing 5-stars and a lottery pick. Has he been doing those things for 30 years?

I wouldnt. Give me a young guy with potential and time to figure it out vs a 66 year old stubborn son of a gun set in his ways.
I know there has been some talk on Shaka the last day or so, and ill put it like this with him, give me the Shaka with his VCU style and I take that over Barnes any day of the week.

Tied against a team that beat him but everyone seems to forget that part. His championship is nothing more than a participation trophy. And ok Pearl had TN ranked #1. How did those 5* work out for him? How about at Texas when he blamed his failures on one and dones? So to answer your question, yes

This is the obvious response to this post, but Shaka? Really? Replacing Barnes with Shaka is literally the one move we've seen definitely not work

You’re joking, right? Shaka....the guy Texas fired Barnes’ for? The same Shaka who has ZERO NCAAT wins at Texas and got bounced by a 14-seed who lost by 20+ in the round of 32?

You’re insane.

You’d be happier with finishing in the bottom half of the league? Do you have a clue how many SEC titles TN has had in the last 75 years?

Saying his championship is nothing more than a participation trophy is dumb. Literally the only people who ever bring up that the championship was shared, in or out of our fanbase, are people who are trying to make an argument to fire/discredit Barnes

VCU Shaka and Texas Shaka are two completely different coaches. Give me the one who pressed, trapped and played fast. Not the slow half court guy at Texas

Take it however you want to take it, but its not something to celebrate.
