Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

I think Barnes, has certainly (one would think) been here far longer than he will remain. It's gonna be a defensive team, with some break out stars every couple years. This year will slip, some, but we're just a couple of pieces being to pretty much what we've been for the last couple of years, a contender. I wouldn't be surprised if we don't make the tournament next year. Doesn't really matter much. I want Coach to retire with dignity. I'd say he has about two years, maybe three, four if I was being generous, before he hangs it up. And I think he's got another stellar team one of those years, probably a couple teams that make the NCAA. But do I expect a #1 ranking or Final Fours going forward, not really, but then again this is my Tennessee Orange I'm rooting for, maybe I should have never expected it in the first place. Yes, I'm a victim, of BVS, and Tennessee basketball is in some part responsible and must take some part of the blame. And yet the year 1979, has in some part begun to fade from my mind.

Somebody asked whether Barnes was worth 5 million a year. I'll say it like this, every time he beats Kentucky, he earns 5 million in exposure, in future ticket sales, in advertising, in butts in seats, in recruiting, in donations, in mojo, etc... These programs run into the 100's of millions and people wonder about a coach getting a fraction of that. Same with football, present coach excluded of course (due to previous Hamburgler giving out out happy meals). If Gruden won't come here for 10 million dollars, find the best person who will and don't worry as much about the "value". And I'm sure you'll find someone a tad better than Bandstand Butch, the Dooley, or Mr. Potatoe Head to run your program.

I think we'll be fine. You guys acted like Zeigler wasn't also a big piece for this team at PG. I believe he can fill KC's role fairly admirably. Plus I'm high on Edwards. I believe he can fill the roll the ZZ played last year. Mashack is certainly due for some increased playing time as well, and he looks like he could easily be all conference defensive team. Powell needs to bounce back, and I think he could do that.

Aidoo provides way more upside than Fulky. Uros will still be serviceable. Remember BHH barely even played when ON was healthy. In all honesty, he sucked last year. As a starter he averaged 4.6 points and just over 2 rebounds per game while shooting 41.7% from the floor and 20% from 3. The sky is falling, how can we ever replace that?

Also, we're still going to add at least someone from the portal. I don't worry about our top end talent too much as I feel really good about Santi, Jo, ZZ, and ON, and pretty good about Aidoo. Uros, Edwards, Mashack, and Powell should all be serviceable as well. I worry about any depth after that though, as really just 1 injury could derail us. Still upper half of the league, LSU and Florida will be taking huge steps back next year, Arkansas will be great, Auburn should be good as well, and Kentucky is Kentucky. I still see us in the top 5.

I hate to be that guy… No I really do, but looking at the returning players and the recruits we have coming in Tennessee is going to take a major step backwards this coming year. With less depth, no KC, this could be the year the Barnes hecklers catch up to him. I’ve been a Barnes believer since he got here and I’ve continued to stick my neck out for him giving him the benefit of the doubt, but is the coaches play style outdated?? I mean all defense, defense , defense , defense and the all to well known phrase,”It’s not about me.”
if you was a recruit would this system jump out at you and make you be interested?? The NBA loves offense, hell everybody does. Ever heard the saying a good offense always beat a good defense?? Well I think that saying is especially true in basketball..
I know I’m probably going to get blasted for this , and part of me really believes in coach Barnes but we have to ask ourselves, is the coaches style outdated boring, and honestly those post season woes makes you wonder if the style even translates to when it matters most.. I know we don’t have any options that’s out there, like a big fish I guess.. but look at TV he was an assistant coach and pretty much everybody overlooked him. He’s done wonders for Tennessee baseball, and it’s because he’s fierce, young, and a go getter with a winning attitude.. maybe just maybe after this season Tennessee finally starts closing the chapter on the Rick Barnes era.

In all seriousness this team still has some solid returning pieces even with the departures to the portal. Some of them (not named BHH) might very well be addition by subtraction. We have a stud at PG who has proven he can run the offense combined with some veteran players on the perimeter in JJJ and SV. BHH leaving hurts but Aidoo, Uros, and ORN have shown they can play. Barnes can still recruit and bring in talented players. Don’t forget that.
Very true, but I think some are wondering if it's beginning to catch up to him. Lots of missed opps out there and when you see your program take a hit with xfers it has to raise questions. At this point we are depending on Coach Barnes to find solid players that can plug in and play right now. The guy I wish he'd go after is Kendric Davis out of SMU. He just entered the Portal. The kid can flat out ball.

I just don’t really see how questions should be raised over transfers currently. Every player who has transferred out within the last few years have mostly been guys who didn’t get a role or see much playing time. BHH is the biggest exception, but even there it’s been discussed at length potential issues around his work ethic, the people around him in his ear, etc. This is just the new norm for college basketball. I just don’t see the current trend of transfers as something to raise an eyebrow about , but maybe it’s just me.

BHH was a bad signing in the first place. They knew he was lazy, and didn’t want to play in the paint when they took him.

This is happening to every school. People are leaving (either on their own or being pushed out) and schools are bringing in 4,5,6 new players. Musselman has done it every year. It's not "catching up to him." He is catching up to it. Gone are the days of developing your entire team. Instant playing time for transfers has created it.

It’s not that he didn’t agree, he was blatantly lying, not sure what place that has in your opinion?
A couple of things he said had merit. Not all. Barnes best team since he been here was Williams' last season. Over simplification maybe but his adj O on kenpom was third in the country. His adj D was down around 40th. His team scored 80 a game. Lilke to see more emphasis on offense in the future and get back to that. It was the absence of a plan B which was talked about mid season that finally ended the run.

I

im not a believer?? So if this team was to lose every single game and I didn’t 100 percent stand behind them and be confident the coaches have it under control I’m not a believer ??
I mean if everybody here is totally fine with watching barnes basketball for another 10 years that’s fine with me your entitled to your opinion but the defense first philosophy is boring and it’s the same ending to every season for Barnes..
with your attitude we will win 17-25 games a year in the regular season. Sneak a tourney championship every 40 years, and never make it to the final four.

Wow, I really debated letting this pass by but the short answer is now is not the time to predict anything overly positive or overly negative. How can you deny the success Coach has had at finding talent from both conventional sources that yielded guys like KC and JJJ and unconventional sources that brought us ZZ and Santi and even guys like Pons from the past. And how he has developed guys off the radar like he did with PB&J? There will probably be solutions out there we that have not even hit the portal yet. If you were arguing with some guys that are predicting Final Fours maybe I could deal with your predictions as an offset, but that is not happening.

I had high hopes for BHH and hate he did not see a path here. Maybe he was afraid too many of HIS minutes would be going to ORN and Aidoo, I don't have a clue. He may or may not explode on the scene elsewhere, but his and all the other portal portal entries should all be able to be offset in this brave new ONE TIME world by an average coach. He is way beyond that. When we have 12-13 guys on the roster, get back to us, then redial again after summer work is complete. Signing several high risk/reward guys each year may be the new norm. You cannot apply pre ONE TIME logic to the current world. None of us has enough experience with todays squad maintenance potentials to make a lot of declarative statements or pose a bunch or quasi rhetorical questions.

Totally reasonable post that not many would take issue with, his contain a bunch of fictitious statements and claims

I think you will see Jahmai and Jonas have a bigger role. I think both will have very productive seasons. I think BHH moving on will hurt, but I didnt see anything more with him last year that would make me more excited in his development than I did in the 2 names I mentioned.

BHH got more minutes due to ORN's injury. Mashack has some slasher skills we can use and Aidoo has a better shot at being the eraser and back to the basket guy to eat up lots of Fulky minutes and maybe make it tough on Uros to sustain his minutes. They both showed an appreciation for their opportunities and showed growth along the way. BHH was more of a 4 guy Aidoo more of a 5. 4's are easier to find.

It's happening for some schools, but in many cases those schools have initial recruits coming in and just need 2 or 3 from the Portal. My comment regarding catching up to him is about staying ahead in recruiting. He has far too many misses on early recruits, but at least he has us in the picture with them. Besides BJ if he had secured 2 or more recruits and only needed 2 or 3 from the Portal I'd say we would be in good shape. I'm confident he will fill out a roster, but the question will be how good will they be this fall. Will those guys be riding the bench or be impact players.

I mean people must have this mindset not to be worried about our team 😂 I mean our post was already our weak point. Losing BHH takes away a playmaker.
The rest of the guys are just meh.
I want something new!! The same Barnes crap is old man.. let’s get another hc before Barnes leaves ut In a dumpster fire. I mean we all see the break up happening let’s do it on our terms this time??
We need a Troll Reject button on this thing. If enough people hit it, you are gone. As it is now, another one is about the Ignore List. Good Lord this is a waste of a thread.

Freak outed the troll-- they need to worry about Kentucky always losing to Barnes. (maybe that's why they want him gone so badly?)
Good. I won’t have to keep reading that drivel. He should do the same to a couple of others while he’s at it.

I mentioned that I really didn’t want to be that guy. Last season in the game forums I constantly was taking up for Rick Barnes. But when you start looking at everything for what it is.. I think it’s time Tennessee starts the process of looking into other options. Barnes has out dated philosophy that is boring and when it matters most what his team is meant to do falls short , or the offense just doesn’t show up.. Seeing what TV has done with vols baseball has made me want more from our basketball program..
we need new life and energy and excitement around basketball. Someone that can take Tennessee basketball farther then any other hc has… I just don’t think Barnes is that guy and like I said If it wasn’t for the sec championship this year.. a lot more fans would be seeing it like this too.
Hahaha. Tennessee needs to look for other options when the guy they have just won 27 games and the sec tournament…. Take your negativity elsewhere, Barnes will piece together another strong team, and make the ncaa tourney again next season.
