Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Sure he never lived up to Pearl, but that S16 run got him some love. Again, he left on his own we dont know what the answer wouldve been here.
I dont blame him for leaving either our AD was a complete mess at the time.

Lol he left on his own because of the fans' expectations and that he wasn't Pearl. You're being quite obtuse acting like that wasn't a huge reason he left.

Let’s say you’re right, op. Barnes will never win the big one, just the basketball equivalent of 10-2, give or take a game…

Fine by me.

The standard for football and women’s basketball at the University of Tennessee is national championships. Anything less than competing consistently for championships is unacceptable in those two sports.

Men’s basketball? Harder to say specifically but that standard is far lower. I’d go bananas if they made it to a final four sometime. But as long as Barnes has a winning record against that team up north in Lexington — despite today’s game, yes — he can stay here until they have to wheel him out onto the court as far as I’m concerned. I may be less a die-hard UT hoops fan than others on here, so I understand if your mileage varies.

I stated be thankful they are limited which is a mathematic reality. I wasn't wrong. You got all twisted up in a knot about something stupid. Sorry I pissed in your Cheerios....pal.
You fail to comprehend that failures in March trump all , and dictate program mood all off season. “Told you so” moments are not “limited” when “ told you so” is the dude can’t get it done when it matters…. Sorry you can’t comprehend any of this….pal

Barnes has taken his teams to 1 (one) Sweet 16 in the last 14 years. IMO that pretty sad. But I guess if we pay Heupel good money we should be satisfied just getting to the Belk...Music City Bowls .

The white knighters dont like facts like that...... Its the point people miss its not just his failures at TN that are the problem its that he has a long history of failures.

2 decades ago, we would've been thrilled to death to have the Mark Richt of hoops running our program.

I know we're all tired of being just good, but this is the best run Tennessee has ever had. This is how you build towards being a true powerhouse. Pearl didn't do this well and he's slimey. Cuonzo had 1 awesome run in him and it wasn't very much fun otherwise. My lifetime as a Vols hoops fan has been mostly hell, otherwise. We should be happy with this. I'm not trying to be preachy, I'm reminding myself even.

Might want to check your facts, brother. Pearl had a better record at Tennessee in six seasons than Barnes has had in 7.5 seasons. Look it up. I believe Pearl also took us to the Elite 8, did he not? Look it up.

This is nothing at all against Coach Barnes. I’m glad he’s our coach. But there comes a time in every college basketball coach’s career when you have to break through the ceiling and take it to next level. I wrote this about Barnes last year. And the year before that. And the year before that. Losing to KY today was bad, esp on Chris Lorton day. I would write “but the tourney is what matters.” But I wrote that last year. And the year before that. And the year before that.

Based solely on experience, I expect us to win close to 30 games and make the NCAA tournament. Then I expect us to win no more than two games and start saying “wait til next year” again. Barnes runs a great program. He recruits very well. He wins games. But he has yet to prove that he’s a tournament coach. That remains his ceiling.

Isnt basketball funny we lose to a team that lost to team that we beat by 42 lol damdest thing I have ever seen

Wasn't a Cuonzo fan by far...But as a tournament sport goes he took UT in 3 years as far as Barnes has in his years here....One Sweet 16.

Barnes Coaching in Basketball, is like Richt Coached in Football. He’ll win enough regular season games to be in the top 15 year in and year out. Currently, it appears this is good enough to be the Head Basketball Coach at TN. He’ll always lose a few games he shouldn’t and will never do well in the Big Tourney.

Chris Lofton deserved a better effort today…..really a Dang shame.

You do realize that if he were to do that and maintain it (which he has) it would make him the best coach in UT basketball history not named Pat Summit. Its not like UT has some history on winning nattys and getting to elite 8's. Record wise only Ray mears has more wins and a higher winning percentage. In fact, at his current pace, he will have more wins in 9-10 years than Devoe 11 and Lowery 12 and will be close to catching what mears did in 15.
How many nattys did any of those guys get? I'll help you out

National Championships: 0
Final Four Appearances: 0
Sweet Sixteen Appearances: 8 (1967, 1981, 2000, 2007, 2008, 2010, 2014, 2019)
NCAA Tournament Appearances: 24 (1967, 1976, 1977, 1979, 1980, 1981, 1982, 1983, 1989, 1998, 1999, 2000, 2001, 2006, 2007, 2008, 2009, 2010, 2011, 2014, 2018, 2019, 2021, 2022)
NCAAT Overall Record: 23-25
NIT Championships: 0
NIT Appearances: 13 (1945, 1969, 1971, 1984, 1985, 1988, 1990, 1992, 1996, 2003, 2004, 2012, 2013)
NIT Overall Record: 13-13

Barnes has 4 of our 24 tourney appearances. 1 of the 8 sweet 16 appearances (just as many as Mears and Devoe). Only 2 Devoe and Pearl had more Tourney appearances. Devoe 2 more but of course he coached 4 more years. Pearl had more appearances and sweet 16's and if you really want to look at the numbers would go down as the most successful coach in UT history except he got run out of town for doing a big stupid. Outside of some huge implosion this season and him getting fired he is easily on track to the winningest and most successful coach in UT men's BB history and its debatable right now if he isn't already given what he has accomplished.
