Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Nah.

Apparently some think we’ll be able to hire Nate Oats or Bill Self from Kansas.
Everybody loves Oats now but he was a mid major gamble too at the time.

unless we luck into another Barnes situation where we get to hire a big name who just got fired for dumb reasons, we will be playing the mid major lottery and hoping we strike gold like Bama did.

I'd hope so. Just hope Barnes doesn't hang on too long as coaches tend to do.

I’m honestly surprised he’s still around tbh with the way things have changed in college sports. I’ve been a pretty big Barnes defender most of the time, but some things can’t be defended. Doesn’t mean I want him gone, but I hope when he does go, it’s with the team in good shape to draw in a good replacement when that time comes.

It’s never been UT’s brand to spend big money on an initial hire. we hire cheap and if you win, THEN we pay you big money

Sorry -- I wrote that facetiously. I've been following UT basketball since the Wade Houston days. This is the best basketball we've had in my lifetime. I have no interest in the gamble that many here are eager to make.

Whenever Barnes moves on, we will likely hire a mid major coach if I had to guess. There just aren’t many instances, at least not that I’m aware of, of established power 5 coaches jumping to another power 5 school.

Typically a coin flip on mid major coaches. Sometimes you get a Nate Oats. Sometimes you get an Archie Miller.

The only time it ever really happens is when a blue blood is hiring (e.g., Bill Self leaving Illinois for Kansas).

non blue bloods almost never poach sitting P6 coaches unless it’s a coach on the hot seat who is leaving before getting fired

Not with Danny White we won't have a mid major.

Yep. Unfortunately a sizable portion of our fan base fails to recognize this. Quite a few have it in their head that top notch coaches far and wide will be lining up for the Tennessee job.

With our money and NIL situation.. you'd be shocked

I’ve heard this line of thinking many times in football coaching searches. In none of those searches were we able to hire a big name coach. It’s not simply a matter of backing up a brinks truck. A lot of schools are willing to shell out big money nowadays.

When does White start looking for somebody to take Tennessee basketball to the next level?

Maybe Barnes retires sooner rather than later. I dont get some fans infatuation with a coach who pulled the UCLA stunt causing UT to grossly overpay for a coach who has next to zero chance of pulling a Final 4, but he loves UT they say.
