Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

Simply, a Barnes team doing what they do in a tournament when it means something. 50/50 proposition at best if he gets the tournament monkey off his back.

Another way to look at those numbers is that over the last 16 years, he racks up wins against chumps and is barely above.500 against conference opponents.

Meaningless. 3 losses to double digit seeds in the NCAA tournament and a loss to a 9 seed last year say a lot more.

I’m not going to defend the Michigan loss or Oregon State loss. Those were bad. The FAU loss isn’t without context, though. We were playing without a point guard and FAU was criminally under seeded as their run to the Final Four proved.

There are fair criticisms of Barnes, but getting to the Sweet Sixteen last season after Zakai got hurt frankly was a really nice coaching job on the part of CRB.

It’s indicative of what’s coming in the NCAA tournament. The same crap we’ve seen year in and year out. I’m not sure I’ve made myself clear here. I’m grateful for what Barnes has done, but it’s a fact he underperforms in March

Are we sure it’s indicative? We’ve seen Barnes win the SEC Tournament and that ended up not being indicative of what was to come in March. Purdue won the B10 tournament last season. We saw how their season ended.

Today rocked my confidence in this team. I don’t expect them to make the second weekend. However, let’s also not pretend that the conference tournament results are a crystal ball telling us what’s to come in the NCAA Tournament.

Teams can play much better or much worse in the NCAA Tournament than they do in conference tournaments. We will see if that is the case for this team.

Except that he’s led his team to the conference finals in 3 of the last 5, which were indeed played in March.
ZZ and DK were atrocious. It's hard to know what Barnes should've done differently entering the game. ZZ was air mailing 3s like he was a scrub. I expect a bit of a chip on their shoulder next weekend.

It definitely means more than nothing you brain dead dolt. Cost us the #1 seed. SEC Champs losing to a team with a losing SEC record is absolutely ridiculous. Get your finger out of Barnes ass
The only reason I care about the #1 seed is because it's never been done.
And you're right about the loss but I'll add: losing to them TWICE.

I just think it's ****ed up when we were on the 1/2 seed line and won the SEC tournament "the committee doesn't put any stock in conference tournaments for seeding" and now this year all the sudden the experts were saying we needed to win the tournament to secure a 1 seed. Can't have it both ways

Exactly. Just want to see it happen once. We got screwed out of getting it in 2018

Think Auburn annihilating us in the conference championship game left a bad taste in the committee’s mouth about us. A close loss and we probably get the 1 seed. That again is a microcosm of the great problem with conference tournaments: some years they matter to the committee. Other years (the one year we actually win the thing) they don’t.

We better hope this team doesn’t play worse 🤷🏻

We won’t play worse than we did in the first half today. Won’t happen. Was saying that just because today was a stinker doesn’t mean that we’ll be a stinker in the tournament. We could be, but it’s also possible that we could play really well. Time will tell.

That's something that I've heard a lot. If you're playing for Barnes, you might as well give every practice 100% on defense or you'll be transferring quickly. Rick never could find that balance of the "all or nothing " mentality. You're flat out exhausted by March. It's too late to expect any different.

I try to temper my expectations when Tennessee makes the tournament, and hope for Barnes to make that one breakthrough finally for the program.
Exhausted by March. Please. They are 18-22 year olds. As an Army retired pilot and to give such a BS excuse is pathetic. Hey soldiers, take the night off because your exhausted. lol we lose the fight.

"Regular season Rick" is trending on Twitter/X for a reason. He has a reputation.

Did nabbing the SEC Tournament title in 2022 do anything to nullify that perception? No? People want a reason to complain. Today sucked, but this has been a damn fine season and acting as if one result spells an early exit as just as nuts as pointing solely to the win in Rupp and saying “natty.”
