Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

So you’re answering for them that they are only looking for losses and don’t come around to enjoy/discuss victories? Isn’t that kind of the definition of trolling?

They shot free throws very well, does that count as offense? Lol. Chandler/Zeigler/Nkamhoua went 0/10 from 3, they were averaging a combined 41% on the year from 3, so that was an expected 4/10 and another 12 points (not sure if/how many of their missed were ORBS and scores). There wasn’t anything offensively that made me feel great, or that we’ve turned a corner offensively, more of a wait and see. My big question is what did no JJJ do? We were forced to play pretty much 2 bigs all game after that, would we have gone more small ball with JJJ, how would that have impacted things?
Where do you get 41% from 3 for those 3 players combined? They’re at 33.1% from 3 now. If you take 10 misses out that takes it up to 35.6%.

"With help from the university" is abject bull. Pearl screwed himself because he was arrogant and, fundamentally, he lacked character (you know, doing the right thing when you think no one is looking). I, like most fans, loved Pearl until his arrogance caused him to harm himself and, more importantly, the program he said he loved. Given Pearl's long and questionable past, there is no way I can ever believe he is on the straight and narrow now. Just winning isn't and cannot be the goal. Winning the right way is the goal I prefer and I could never follow or respect anything BP does again, given how he let this place down for absolutely no good reason other than his own pride and arrogance.

Barnes is a man of respect and I am glad he's here. I'm also glad that UT stepped up its pay scale both to keep him and for a future reference when the inevitable day comes that he leaves. Now, maybe, we won't have to play the dumpster dive game looking for good luck with a new unproven replacement we can get on the cheap. Go Vols!
I think Pearl is likely on the straight and narrow now that the NCAA made everything that used to be illegal legal (BBQs and paying players). He’s good to go!

Seriously, what I’m hearing is Barnes is not crazy about NIL and isn’t embracing it like other coaches in the SEC are. To what extent is he behind others? I have no idea. If it’s true then it won’t take long for us to fall into the bottom third of the conference so I guess we shall see! I hope it isn’t true or Barnes changes if it is.

You are correct, not sure, I obviously did the math wrong or put the wrong persons % in, apologies.
No worries. It just struck me as too high for those 3 guys so I checked. 35.6% heading into that game is still a very respectable number. I was surprised it was that high actually. If we take good shots, smart shots, we can be a pretty good shooting team. We often don’t take good shots though. Im still hopeful it’ll click at some point.

Danny White’s the one that dropped the ball with N-I-L.

And why would I do that?
Because if you are intent on judging the man himself and his system ... I think it is only fair to have actually had a conversation with him.
Your assessments of him ... would carry some weight if you had actually talked with the man ... but here goes anyway ... your points ...
1. His age, makes it less likely he ever doesnt anything. It also makes it harder for him to relate to his guys. [Oh really, I'm 65 and I can teach college kids and middle schoolers, as well as adults, equally well.]
2. His lack of post season success. [I will grant this one ... although I would like to see a little more data before I opine on this topic.]
3. His offense sucks [Meh, that is your opinion. Opinions are like noses, everybody's got one - doesn't make yours or mine better.]
4. His rotations make no sense. [Cause you have never had a conversation with the man. You do not know what he is attempting to achieve. What his goals are, his objectives, etc.]
5. He refuses to play freshman. [You get 4 Pinocchio's for this one. And it really hurts your credibility with all the other points. Just in the last two years: Keon, Jaden (25, 26 mpg) Kenny C (who is leading the team in minutes at 29), Zakai who is a 19 mpg and will likely finish the season above 20.]
6. You say he seems like a good person, but rumors ive read here, TOS, and other places say hes a pain in the ass behind closed doors. [If rumors were horses, we would all have stallions. What were the rumors you heard about Vince Lombardi or John Wooden. And while we are at it ... get behind a closed door with him and come back and tell me how he treated you. Let's see you or Kevin Durant. Do not know either one of you. But I do know what Kevin Durant said after a year of spending time around Rick on a daily basis, "I learned a lot from this guy, was much more than a coach but a father figure! Love you, Thank you" My dad was difficult at times, but I am a better man for it.]

Very well-said. Thanks.

Bill Battle was better than anything we've had in football in quite a while.
Bill Battle was handed a championship level team and ran UT into a terrible hole
. Guy could not recruit football players, was fixated on fine young men who were not Div 1 talent. He soured me forever on beaming smiles, big necks, jutting jaws and perfect short hair. Prototype look for big donors of the time not so much for early 1970s young people we needed to win.

Were you this pissed at Pearl for his early/bad exits in the tournaments? He had plenty in the SECT and about half his NCAAs. Pearl had good enough teams to have at least 1 FF, 2 EEs, 4 S16s, and 1 or 2 SECT championships.
Pearl wasn't nearly 70 with a 20 year track history of what he was going to do. He was growing and so was the program.

Moving the posts as you always do. You talk about Barnes underachieving here, but completely give Pearl a pass when he underachieved just as much. This is why you're not taken seriously on here.

Barnes ncaa tournament record of 22 wins and 23 in the lost column says it all about whether he's good or not.
Basketball is a tournament sport. No doubt. Pearl has 9 appearances and 11 wins. Yet I’m told he’s the greatest coach ever.

Edit: he may have more. Article I used may be old.

Serious question here…who extended the contract? Fulmer? Danny White would not have extended.
Fulmer did after Barnes used his offer to go to the west coast as leverage to get more money. I am pretty sure that is not the way a Christian behaves but he has been talking out of both sides of his mouth for awhile now. Read his resume from Texas, that tells the story.

10 appearances and 15 wins in D1

You’re acting like Pearl’s time here was the greatest thing ever, yet he had plenty of embarrassing moments.

That pathetic showing against Louisville in the Sweet Sixteen.

Losing to Kentucky in the SEC Tournament by 29.

Pearl isn’t untouchable despite what you and others think.

Danny White’s the one that dropped the ball with N-I-L.

Probably some blame to go all around here but we are behind schools we should never be behind when it comes to NIL. We've got a fractured booster base and an administration that has been poorly run for 15 years. The root causes go back a lot further than Danny White.

He won't respond to this because he's too delusional to see it.
