Rick Barnes discussion (merged)

We are top 40 all time in wins. A long stretch of SEC history they did away with the SECT. Only 1 bid was sent. Kentucky got it over us, even in years where we were tied in the regular season standings and beat them head to head. So we've had fewer chances when we had very good teams. Unfortunately a good 20 year stretch of the multiple bid per league era coincided with our biggest downturn in basketball fortunes.
One thing that hurts us in coach searches is the way the university handled Pearl, holding the photo and not telling Pearl makes coaches Leary of signing on here when they can't be sure the university has their back.

He was better than he gets credit for, mainly because the way his final season went. But he's one of the competent coaches we've had. Unfortunately we've rarely had coaches that were above competent and when we did it all just blew to pieces at the end. That's why I hope the Barnes era ends with a feel good retirement rather than another clown show transition.

I agree. Hope he finishes his string soon and leaves a solid roster.

However with the portal and transient nature of bball, any coach coming here when Barnes retires will have to build his roster as I would expect mass departures - it’s the way it goes.

We have great facilities, top 10 fan support, pay top 5 money and have low expectations. Any coach would be a fool not to want to coach here to be honest.

Yep good ole Mike Hamilton. F*** that guy. I'm not absolving Pearl of any blame for lying. He obviously shouldn't have done it. But when your AD knows the NCAA has pictures and don't let your coach know they've got em it's as if your sabotaging your own coach.

Yes, he has recruited, but has had major misses on closing the deal.

He is swimming in waters that UT never really has and thus, will lose recruits to other high level schools. But that really wasn’t the original discussion. We were talking about Cuonzo and Tyndall.

Tyndall wasn't around long to see what he could do. Coach Martin had decent recruiting enough to get a team to the sweet 16 and one bad call (charge on Stokes) from getting to the Elite 8. The issue with Coach Martin is his teams lost games where they should have won. Coach Barnes overall has had better recruiting, but he has recruited several that had no business on his teams.

You are behind on this discussion. It was initially about what was left over for the next coach. The top scorer and 2 of the top 4 on Martin’s SS team were Pearl recruits. But Martin was not recruiting well enough to leave much after that year.

It may not have mattered, we would have likely choked in the tournaments. We haven't won an SEC Tournament in over 40 years and we have only made it past the Sweet 16 once ever. We are horrible in Tournaments.

We are two admins away from that. I seriously doubt that matters now.

I think you must live in an alternate universe or you're smoking the funny stuff. Barnes didn't ask for a raise or simply listened to their offer. He was all in and had his bags packed. If you were paying attention, you would understand that he has clearly stated he was ready to go, but UCLA wasn't willing to pony up the money. Such a great show of loyalty, huh? That's called dropping us like a $2 hooker if UCLA thought he was worth the cash outlay. You seriously don't understand that fact?
It was my understanding he was ready to go until he learned HE would have to pay the buyout on his contract.

So it was less about heritage or tradition and more about personal financial gain....sounds about right. Anyone who thinks Barnes has even a shred of loyalty to Tennessee is out of their minds.
It's funny you quoted that SI article about the money, but ignored the quote later in the article.

"God told me I needed to stay at Tennessee. It's not just basketball. I love this university. I love this community. I love this state. I belong here."

Ha! That's why he was raring to go until it fell apart on him. Easy to fall back on God in hindsight. Hilarious.

He sure loved Tennessee when he was quick to leave us hanging. Frankly, his comment on God comes across as disingenuous at best, and could potentially expose some characteristics of a sociopath.
