Rob Neyer Article Comparing Pence and Bourn

No doubt the Braves had the better trade. Not necessarily the better player, but they gave away much less than what they would've had to for Pence.

I don't know. When you take overall value into account, Bourn may very well be the better player. It's close, though, for sure.

He's certainly not just a "slightly better version of Willy Taveras", I'm pretty sure of that.

I don't know if he's been the 2nd best NL outfielder since '09...but he's definitely in the top tier.

Player A: 663 games, .271/.338/.359 212 steals
Player B: 670 games, .274/.320/.327 195 steals

Pretty comperable players.

Bourn is a better baserunner by quite a bit. He's also slightly better at getting on base. He's the better fielder by a large margin.

But yeah, they were close.

But he's not "slightly better than Willy Taveras." He is clearly a better player.
I said he is a better Willy Taveras and that is a very valuable baseball player. You would never catch me having Fast Willy near the top 15 OF in the NL.

The main thing is he fills 3 different roles the Braves really needed, and that's the bottom line.
1.) a good CFer
2.) good leadoff man
3.) a major threat on the base paths.

The only thing he doesn't have that the Braves also needed is a power bat, but all in all I'm excited for this addition.

Michael Bourn is twice the player Taveras is, and WAR proves that. Willy didn't have back to back 5 WAR seasons.

Braves fans have gone straight up trailer park. They've bought a used IROC-Z and are acting like they got a Ferrari.

More like we stole a used, but well-taken care of IROC-Z and we're exciting about having it after years of driving a Pinto.

Exactly 0 people have said they are equally good baseball players in this thread.
In their glee, Braves fans are overlooking a simple truth. The reason they were able to "steal" Bourn is that nobody in baseball thought that he was valuable enough to warrant offering more than Atlanta did.

How dare we show a bit of excitement over acquiring our first our leadoff hitter since Rafael Furcal that happens to be batting .300 and playing excellent defense. How dare we.

LOL, no kidding. No one said he was the second coming of Ricky Henderson, but he's clearly an upgrade over everything we've been running out there in recent memory. And we gave up diddly poo to get him.
