Rob Neyer Article Comparing Pence and Bourn

LOL, no kidding. No one said he was the second coming of Ricky Henderson, but he's clearly an upgrade over everything we've been running out there in recent memory. And we gave up diddly poo to get him.
Exactly . . . I couldn't care less about his WAR, OPS+ or whether he can hold Willy Taveras' jock. He's an actual leadoff man and he's a lot better than Nate McLouth and Jordan Schaefer.

You're already digging yourself a giant hole.
Yeah, I'm scared to death that a guy who has made his mark hitting a soft .300 in meaningless games for an awful team is going to prove to be just what the Braves need to win it all.

I don't think that he's going to be Willie Freaking Mays, but Jesus, you're acting like it's ridiculous that we're excited to have him as a Brave.

On the surface, sure, that's how it looks. But they're a lot closer than you or I would probably have imagined.
I don't really buy that, but I think Bourn is a good fit for the Braves' needs.

How about this:

Hunter Pence is a better player than Michael Bourn. Not by an overwhelming margin, however. Bourn is the more valuable baserunner and defensive player, and the Braves gave up much less for him than the Phillies gave up for Pence.

The deal that the Braves got in their trade was better than the deal which the Phillies got.

I'd agree with that. People have to see the deal in context. The Braves managed to plug their biggest hole without giving up their top prospects to do it.

BUT . . . Jordan Schaefer and Brett Oberholser don't exactly equate to "nothing". In a year or two, that's going to be Houston's starting CF and #3 or 4 starter.

Schafer will never be a consistent leadoff man. Oberholtzer? I could see that, but it's not like he has future star written all over him.

People keep acting as if Philadelphia gave up something meaningful in that trade. They are built to win right now. By the time Cosart and Singleton are ready, the Phillies will be in full blown rebuild mode.

And Bourn is?

He strikes out about 130 times a year and has never hit higher than .285, this year withstanding.

The thing is though, a marginal CF and a bottom of the rotation guy are a pretty good return for a guy that you know for a fact you aren't going to re-sign anyway.

If he pans out. That's no guarantee. I mean, I guess it could end up being a fair trade if one of the minor leaguers turns into a solid player. Oberholtzer is probably the most likely to become that guy, but I don't think we'll end up wishing we had any of the 4 guys in the future.

Schafer will never hit over .250 in a full Major League season.

You know this how? Not saying he will be stranger things have happened.

Bourn is a career .271 hitter, not really worth mentioning average when the guy you are comparing him to is nothing more than average himself.

When in your opinion will Cosart, & Singleton be ready?

Bourn is a significantly better hitter, defender, and teammate than Schafer. How's that?
