Robert Hubbs: Underachiever in the making or is it coaching?

But all great players make an impact early and often. That doesn't mean force bad shots and jack something up every time you touch the ball. Good scorers don't usually ease into their offensive role they look to score.

Of course, you do realize that we currently have a player on our roster who is the complete antithesis to you entire quoted statement, right?

Jordan McRae is a great player and a great scorer. It took him two years to realize his potential and ability as such. Since then, he has been an all-conference player.

So, no, not all great players make an impact early and often.

I get saying "he's a freshman give him a chance" but there are a lot of freshmen who come in an contribute right away especially 5*s. I think Scotty Hopson produced more than this in his freshman year.

The only way that this could be an antithesis to my statement would be if I agreed that Jordan Mcrae is a GREAT player which was a premature assumption on your part. Obviously we will not come to agreement on this topic because we have different definitions of GREAT. Jordan Mcrae is a one of my favorite players and is very good but nowhere near great. Just for the sake of the argument for every 1 example you can think of that ended up being GREAT and did not make an impact early I can give you 10 that did.

Every player develops at their own pace, amd sometimes based on how much their team needs them to develop.

It's unfair to say Jabari Parker, Andrew Wiggins, Julius Randle came ready to play from day 1and be a major contributor, so Hubbs is obviously a bust. He just isn't ready to make that kind of impact right now. It's not his fault, and it's not Zo's fault, and it doesn't mean he won't make that kind of contribution next year or the year after. Mostly, he is playing behind an all-SEC SG right now.

A lot of people are going to look like clowns if/when Hubbs comes into his own. Just look at the Jordan McRae thread bumped from a couple years ago.

Well then the total subjectivity of the word "great" only plays into your hand in this discussion.

The biggest objection I have with your prior stated opinion is the absolute nature of saying, "But all great players make an impact early and often." That's just not true, but I have a feeling that any example I can unveil will fall short of your subjective view of "greatness" for the sake of this discussion, so we'll just agree to disagree.

I'm not saying he should be Jabari Parker or Andrew Wiggins im just sayin D. Thompson, a 3 star, has outplayed Hubbs since day 1.

True, but several factors to consider. One being that there was much more of a need/opportunity at PG for Thompson than there is for Hubbs at SG right now. Also, perhaps Thompson was somewhat underrated coming out. His senior year film is very impressive and he climbed the rankings as a senior as well, breaking into the Rivals 150 in the final rankings. Perhaps they were just a little behind the curve on him and he should have been ranked higher to start with. Victor Oladipo (#144 in 2010) and Trey Burke (#142 in 2011) come to mind as guys who were severely underrated coming out of high school.

I think two of our freshmen were severely underrated.

In fairness, I have to acknowledge that Davis and Thompson seem underrated, but just like with Hubbs, it's been nine games. Let's see if they can sustain and build on what we have seen thus far.

I didn't say they were above criticism, but I do think they should deserve it b4 it starts. FYI Hubbs shot it twice Saturday, so jacking it up is more ignorance.

That is exactly my point! He isn't a LEADER and doesn't play aggressive the way a coveted 5 star recruit should! He looks scared and lost. Wiggins, Parker, etc...those are men beyond their years and it shows. Hubbs is not in that league.

...and whoever threw that stat out about Scotty Hopson averaging 17 pts....IT TOOK HIM 3 YEARS TO DO IT!! Im glad that idiot got screwed in the NBA draft..pi zz on him.

You stay classy.

No, not a troll, just not a big fan of Scotty Hopson. One of the biggest underachievers in Tennessee Basketball history. He screwed us over so why not screw him?

Scotty was and is one of ours.

Wow, you went beyond being passionate to being crazy. How did Hopson screw UT? You act like Tennessee got the death penalty and Scotty was directly responsible.

You seriously need to either step away for a short time or calm way down.

He screwed us over by being a too cocky for his own good and bolting a year early! He was NOT ready for the NBA. You all knew it, he knew it, Pearl new it and NBA scouts knew it. He needed another year to develop his game..plus our 2011 team would have been that much better. So, yeah, hes an idiot and got what he deserved...Im sorry.
