Robert Marve

You guys need to be a little easier on Marve. He was just a freshmen last year and was coming off an injury to his hand, had horrible coaching, and was constantly switched in and out of the game with Harris (which is a terrible idea with QBs). Just give him a year under some of the best QB/Off coaches in the nation, and he will be fine come 2010. He broke all of Tebow's records in Florida, and he can move with the ball as well. The talent is there, just give it some time...

The QB just before Marve was supposed to be a stud, too. Perhaps Miami just isn't very good with QBs anymore.

Here's a relevant but fairly empty article from Indiana: Ex_Miami QB weighs transferring to Boilers | The Journal Gazette, Fort Wayne, Ind.

They imply it as being 50/50 between Purdue and Tennessee. I personally think he has to be a Tennessee lean. If having a scholarship right away or not was a big factor, he would have already made his choice. If you take that out, Tennessee looks like the stronger candidate.

You could look at it another way. The importance of the football opportunity dwarfs the importance of one years tuition, room and board as he can afford it. The perceived football opportunity must be pretty comparable between the two schools or the decision would have been easy and done by now. If the football opportunity is seen as pretty comparable, the one year scholarship could provide a tipping point in favor of Purdue.

Personally, I think the football oppportunity at Tennessee is superior in all respects except two.

1) UT's projected O-Line depth in 2010 possibly making 2011 a make or break year.
2) Possibly competing w/ Cam Newton or Jake Heaps. Does he feel like he's in control of his own destiny (see BJ Coleman) ?

At Purdue, Marve has more certainty that he will be the man if he plays well.

It pains me to say, nice post. Makes sense.

He will only have to pay his way to UT for one semester, not a year...

In 2010, Marve would be the 4th Purdue QB on scholarship. At UT, Marve would be the 2nd QB on scholarship, and that's if Stephens doesn't transfer like some suspect he might. I didn't count the class of 2010 cuz I'm assuming Marve, a redshirt junior, would beat out a true freshmen at either school after learning the system for a year...

Marve has to be away for 1 full year after he left Miami before a scholly would take effect here because we are one of the schools that he was not allowed to transfer to. So that means he would be eligible for scholarship in June of next year, as I understand it.

Sab mentioned in his blog that since Marve sat off the team last spring that he could join UT's team this coming spring.....I don't know how that works, but that was the information I was going off of...

He is eligble for a scholarship in December 2009. He has not been at Miami this spring. It was a very smart move by him...

He may have sat out, but did Shannon release him from scholarship this spring or not?? That would be the determining factor.

The QB just before Marve was supposed to be a stud, too. Perhaps Miami just isn't very good with QBs anymore.

Here's a look at the past few big time Miami recruits at QB:
'02 Marc Guillon- 4 star, #7 QB
'03 Kyle Wright- 5 star, #1 QB
'04 Kirby Freeman- 4 star, #6 QB
'07 Robert Marve- 4 star, #8 QB

I mean, I can understand 1 or 2 of them not panning out. But all 4 of them? With that kind of talent, it seems like at least 1 of them would be good. Something's not right...

Just goes to show that raw talent is not everything. You still have to develop them and hone them.

Just have to wonder if JC would have been a much better QB if say CDC (Cut) was his coach for all 5 years of his development. I would imgaine that he would be a MUCH better QB.

I think Marve will be in good hands with CJC and CLK. Between the two they have coached the likes of Drew Brees, Kyle Orton, Matt Leinhart, Carson Palmer, John David Booty. Heck, Marve's high school vids look very Breesesque.

Kyle Wright didn't improve a bit during his time in Miami.

He would be riding the bench.

Will Marve turn down a scholarship at a Big Ten school to pay to play at an SEC school? The decision could come as soon as Friday. In the meantime, it's important to keep in mind that the Marve family isn't exactly struggling for cash. His father, Eugene Marve, played 12 years in the NFL. And, in a key move, Marve has already spent a semester out of school since leaving Miami. So the Marve family would actually only have to pay for one semester of tuition, the fall of 2009, before the one-year scholarship limitation runs out that is keeping Marve from transferring to any school of his choice.

Marve Might Walk on With Vols, but How Much Will He Matter? -- NCAA Football FanHouse

He is still on scholarship, but since he has already left school for one semester, he will only have to pay his way for the fall semester. Spring 09 + Fall 09 = 1 Year...

I understood that part, but now I get where that was coming from. I still wonder though how scholarship thing works though, even IF he sat out the spring semester and was still on scholly?? Oh well, as far as I have read and been informed that UT is pretty much his destination so it will all be worked out I'm sure.

Captain obvious to the rescue once again......

The fact he is unable to even talk to our coaches can't be good at all. What a stupid rule...I think he will end up at Purdue Friday based mainly on the fact he has had so little communication with our coaches. He seems to be more comfortable in the spread too and has an awesome relationship with their coaches. It's prob. for the best considering if we do land him it could hurt our chances with Heaps, Scroggins, etc....

There are other ways to communicate with Marve. Hubbs pointed this out earlier today. Marve is a Vol, some people just haven't realized it yet...

Here's something I found interesting from the GVX article....

As per NCAA transfer rules, Marve isn’t allowed to talk to UT coaches and would have to pay for his schooling for a year since Miami refused to release him to UT.

That means, according to rule, that once he leaves Miami AND is not under scholarship with them anymore he would have to pay for school for a year, not six months. Maybe Larry can help me out with this in the morning, he's good with understanding how these things work.
