I don't see how Jackson can be considered defenseless when he didn't leave his feet and had the ball.

A defenseless player is defined as:

(a) a player in the act of or just after throwing a pass;
(b) a receiver catching or attempting to catch a pass;
(c) a runner already in the grasp of a tackler and whose forward progress has been stopped;
(d) a kickoff or punt returner attempting to field a kick in the air;
(e) a player on the ground at the end of a play.

Jackson was absolutely defenseless.

what are the odds that play doesn't get flagged if he holds onto the ball?

So apparently they are supposed to let him catch it then brace for the tackle. Robinson made the right play IMO. As a db he has the right to separate the ball from the receiver.

This thread reminds me of a great quote from Alvin Mack "Let's kill them all, let the paramedics sort'em out"

There's nothing wrong with a good, "clean" hit. Stuff like what Meriweather is should warrant a major fine or a suspension if continued multiple times.

Dude, Jackson was twitching when he was on the ground.

The overall problem with this is that:

A) Jackson is about 180 lbs soaking wet
B) He has had concussion problems
C) It was a terrible decision/pass from Kolb
D) It happened on a weekend with multiple other helmet-helmet hits and this season has seen a lot of concussions

If that pass was 1 second earlier or to a receiver that is bigger than high school sized nothing would have been made about it. It was the right call to make with the rules that are in place.

Robinson willingly went for an enormous hit and paid (concussing himself and Jackson) the price. It's not about the $50,000 or the penalty. It's about what longterm damage he inflicted not only on himself but also Jackson just so he can get some props in the film room.

I understand all of this. my point is, the definition of defenseless receiver is pretty dumb. if he held onto the ball, he wouldn't have been considered a defenseless receiver, you know, since the ball offers so much protection.

I agree it was a terrible pass/decision by Kolb, but what does Jackson's size or concusion problems have to do with it? He plays in the nfl by choice and he's very good. Let's assume he lets him make the catch and jackson puts a move on him which is very possible then he gets criticized for not making a play. IMO it was a good hit but it just came at the wrong time.

Absolutely nothing. I'm trying to explain the fervor about Robinson's hit. I've already said I thought it was clean and shouldn't be fined. If he hit like that against a 200 lb WR nothing would have happened.

It was a clean hit that was exacerbated by the minuscule size of Jackson and a very ill advised route straight into zone coverage. If anything I lay the most blame for trying to get Jackson killed on Kolb. He should have made that pass 1-2 seconds earlier or not at all.

Since I haven't affirmed it yet... I don't think the "defenseless receiver" rule should be in place as it currently is. Since it is in place, however, in it's current wording... it was 100% the right call.

Some hits aren't meant to be vicious. With the speed of the game sometimes you can't adjust in time. Other hits are. Harrison of the Steelers comes to mind of those who are as he lead with his helmet. The Robinson hit to me wasn't a fineable hit

You put a 175 guy on a crossing route in the NFL and you'll get that guy f#&$ed up. Especially if that guy doesn't know how to read a zone defense and adjust his route/speed to sit in the lapse of coverage and instead runs himself quite quickly straight into an awaiting defender.

Robinson is paying the piper on this hit but it's not his fault.

Pretty sure it was 10% of this year's salary.

It was a one time $75,000 fine. He makes over $13,000,000 this year. My math was wrong... it's 5%, not .005. He might have been fined a total of 10% this year as this isn't the first time he's been flagged for helmet-helmet.

Karlos Dansby questions when the NFL will go to flag football.

"We'll be counting to five Mississippi before 2012."

Harrison's hit wasn't helmet to helmet but pads to helmet which in large part was due to Massaquoi bobbling the pass and bending way down to make the catch
