Romney's VP pick

Spin it ever how you choose that does not change Romney from being a hypocrit on this issue.

I have stated several times on this board that we all know Romney is a wealthy guy and if he would release his taxes they would be packed to death.

The point is that Romney is saying the American people do not need to see his returns before hiring him yet at same time he is requiring several years returns as part of his vetting process.

I don't need to see either one of their returns but this is another public relations blunder by team Romney.

it doesn't look right.

Doesn't bother me. Had to make requests of people below me due to legal or internal policies that I really did not care about myself but did it anyway because the bosses did care about.

Wait, is that true ? Romney held potential VP picks to a higher standard than he holds himself?

Sense of privilege runs deep in this man.

This thread and a few of its posters keep taking highly frequent vacations to la-la land.

1. VP picks generally don't have a resounding effect on GE's. Quayle, Cheney, Gore and Biden all show that.

2. No, this won't mean the debates are an easy win for the right. Romney will still have things to answer for and, obviously, Obama will too.

3. This election, despite the VP pick, still will not be a landslide for either candidate. To those who continue claiming such, you are all idiots. Romney is still a flip flopping beacon of uninspired manure and Obama is still an incompetent liar.

Basically, this election is a toss up between two sub-par candidates. That is all.

Well put!

And LG plays the faux outrage card like an old lady who just saw a Hustler in a church pew.

The difference is that the returns are still private and none of the VP prospects had to worry about Romney twisting the data.

No difference.

He wants to make sure there is nothing in their past that could hurt him. Tax returns are part of the evidence he looks at for that purpose.

We want to make sure there is nothing in Romney's past that would hurt us. Tax returns are part of the evidence we look at for that purpose.

Honestly, Romney has known this was an issue, it's hurting him badly in polling, yet they don't have the good sense not to ask his VP contenders for returns when they know it's going to be hoisted up yet again and bring further attention to Romney's failure to release his own.

There is a massive difference - in the first instance you are speaking of "hurting him" politically.

In the second I can't imagine what the "hurt us" refers to but there is nothing conceivable in his returns that could hurt you. They could hurt him politically.

If we need this type evidence to ensure a candidate won't hurt us it should be law and we should absolutely see Obama's transcripts. Hell, every candidate should go through top secret level security clearance investigations and the results should be public.

Likewise, we need this same information from influential politicians - House and Senate leaders at a minimum.

All very good arguments. Keep making them. They are clearly working as far as the voters are concerned.

the voters worried about Romney's tax returns were never voting for him anyway. Besides, it's not like many of them would understand anything past a 1040ez

I recognize the difference between political impact and real impact.

It's absurd to think that Romney's tax returns are hiding something that could hurt us all.

OK.

Then there is no reason not to release them.

Of course there is if he thinks his chances are better politically without them. Same for the transcripts and thesis - why did Obama fight so hard to keep them under wraps? He thought and thinks they will hurt him politically.

In the larger scheme - neither contain evidence of anything.

When he picks Ryan and tries to relaunch his campaign as all about government finances, the deficit, tax reform, and budgets, he absolutely makes his own tax history completely relevant. The choice will be between the standard trickle down theories versus repeal of the Bush tax cuts for the top earners.

This is what the Romney campaign doesn't seem to understand. It is his own campaign platform that makes his tax returns relevant. That is why the issue is going to continue to be a huge drag on his campaign moving forward: its because every time Romney opens his mouth he makes the election about the very issues reflected by his own financial history, and particularly his tax returns..
