Rucker: Nico is being redshirted

I’m not so sure about the OL. The transfer portal has a good chance to be our saving grace. Offseasons aren’t nearly as stressful now since we don’t only have to worry about recruiting classes.
It hard to get quality OL from the portal. There are 10,000 wide receivers but not too many good OL.

Does anyone know how far Cook or Beck can throw an orange? I thought Huepel was supposed to be some kind of QB guru: he has now twice picked Joe to be his starter. The first time, he picked him over Hooker. Then, he picked him over Nico. I don't think a peewee coach would be that wrong twice.

This is just a cop out answer to make his handling of QBs this year less questionable. That answer is not good enough.

If redshirting was ever in the cards for Nico, then it makes it even more irresponsible to not go to the portal and get a QB to push Joe. It is very clear that no matter how poorly Joe played, Heupel is now saying Nico was never realistically going to be the guy….

Okay, so why don’t we have a real backup then? Why didn’t we go get a real option to compete with Joe? Just dumb program management.

Absolutely agreed. CJH bought a lot of good will last year, but this year has been an abject failure. Not the fact of losing 4 games because a lot of us thought that was realistic, but the manner in which we lost and the issues that have been apparent for all to see that he has taken zero action on since game one.

I mean how does a guy who get paid based on the performance of his team—stick with the obvious loser that Milton is, was, and always will be? It’s not hard to see—he just doesn’t have it. And I don’t get paid to do this. In fact I pay money watching someone make an idiotic decision thst should have been made going into the season. I would have legit split reps between Nico and Milton going into this season. The moment Joe…Joe’d, it would be opening up the next chapter to Nico.

How are you going to redshirt a guy who is gonna be gone in two years anyway?

This!!! I live in Maryville and frequently listen to the sports talk shows,.All year long I’ve heard media guys and VFL’s say Nico is not ready.Yet every armchair QB and redneck in Tennessee think he is.
And Joe is ready? What about any of the other QB’s on the roster when Joe displays he is a walking bad decision? I don’t care if it’s a kid from fraternity row, at least try something different to show you give a damn about the game or the team.

It’s the same Joe from the first day he got here. If we can see that, then the guys getting paid millions should be able to see it. I’ve said it over and over again, but if the guy isn’t getting it done, then there’s a bunch of guys that would be willing to try. When you are buried on the scoreboard, what is there to lose?

Why would Nicco not transfer out. Coach says he wasn't better than Joe freakin Milton. Right now TN has nothing coming in unless they get really lucky in the portal. Remember freshman can't play here. Why would he not transfer to Washington or Oregon where there's talent waiting for the next good QB.

That’s the thing—there’s NOTHING to lose. That’s what makes the decision so stupid to stick with Milton.

You stick with Milton—and you lose fanbase and alumni support because as an alumni that makes big donations to Tennessee—I am thinking my Alma mater’s football team MAY be led by an idiot for one reason:

The result we got this season would have been palatable if I felt like we were developing the game changing QB that was going to be the leader of the team. You’re sending out a signal to fans to be patient. You’re sending out a signal to transfers and recruits there’s a QB in Knoxville you want to come play with.

Instead, you stick with a guy that Michigan was smart enough to cut bait with 2 years ago….and we now have to wonder if our head coach has some sort of directional syndrome.

I would surmise he's not as good as advertised, at least not at this point, or they wouldn't be doing this.

I said the same thing a bunch.......but one of the post game shows brought up a good point, Hooker only played last year because Milton got hurt. And by the time Milton came back Hooker was already balling out and they couldnt switch back. Actually made me think. I really do wonder if Heupel is loyal / "good guy" to a fault

I don’t attend practices so I don’t know if we have a better option. This falls back on recruiting and coaching changes.I for one thought for sure we had better options than JG when he was there but when those QB’s transferred out I think it proved he was indeed our best option
