Rodman said if Bird were black, he'd just be another player. Isiah was asked his thoughts and he backed up Rodman.
Then everybody flipped out.

Basically that he was overrated because he was white, and that the league/media really wanted a white player to do well.
Make no mistake, his radio show was pure entertainment and funny as hell. Away from that show he was a true conservative. You often didn't get to see that side of him. His show was geared towards garnering listeners and to achieve on that front as highly as he did came the fear mongering and hate speech. It's pretty ignorant of you to think he appealed to all RepublicansThis from a “lifelong Republican” LOL such a clown
Your first paragraph hits the nail squarely on its headNow that I think about it, the popularity of Limbaugh should have been an indication that the Republican Party could end up with somebody like Trump as its leader.
Rush was an anti-PC bomb-thrower with lots of bugaboos in his personal life from the perspective of conservatives (married 4 times, prescription drug problems). He understood that politics was downstream from culture, and was an entertainer first and foremost.
I don't recall hardly anyone flipping out over that. Years latter there was a stink but at the time the press and most people shrugged it off as the Pistons running their mouths.
I vaguely remember when that went down. A 1987 pre-internet "flip out" barely registered compared to today.I guess that's a matter of opinion. People flipped out. Rodman's agent completely flipped out on him and forced him to apologize.
How Dennis Rodman Was Forced To Apologize To Larry Bird Over Racial Comments In 1987
NYT article from the time
The controversy began when Dennis Rodman, a Piston rookie, said in the locker room that Bird was ''very overrated'' and that he had won three straight most valuable player awards only ''because he was white.'' Moments later, Thomas, told of Rodman's remarks, said he ''had to agree with'' him. ''Larry Bird is a very, very good basketball player,'' he said. ''But if he was black he'd be just another guy.''
Thomas said he had been crushed by insinuations that his remarks revealed him to be a racist.

Same here. I started listening when I was at UT early 90s. I thought he had some unique ways of communicating American exceptionalism and conservatism. Didn’t really listen much for past 20 years. I didn’t get on board with his Trump love.I had not listened to Rush in years and years, but listened to him daily back in the 90’s and early 00’s.
His insight was usually spot on and that along with his superior shtick drove the poor little liberals mad.
The warning signs were glaringly clear. Now that I think about it, the popularity of Limbaugh should have been an indication that the Republican Party could end up with somebody like Trump as its leader.
