Big difference between Michelle Obama and any other woman weighing between 160-170? Michelle's in shape and healthy (and tall). I like the intentions of her campaign, at least. Remember, it's not about being trim and skinny. It's about being healthy.

Like it or not, we're a gluttonous country. There is NO way a nutritional or fitness initiative (government sponsored or no) could be bad for us.

Really? Should they regulate fats, sodium, hours of exercise, etc.?

I don't recall any mandatory regulation, although I think elementary schools should have more phys ed and healthier cafeterias.

Statistically, we are the most obese country in the world. Why shouldn't something be done?

Just shut up Rush. This has zero to do with anything. And perhaps you should back away from the buffet yourself big boy.
Rush Limbaugh says First Lady is no swimsuit model - Yahoo! News

Rush Limbaugh flunked out of college, has been married and divorced 4 times, has been convicted of drug abuse, has never contributed any offspring, community service, run for office, etc., but wrote a book entitled "The Way Things Ought To Be". What if everyone was like Rush Limbaugh?

Messaging is fine. But Nancy's "just say no" certainly was ridiculed for good reason even though it addressed a real problem.

Various municipalities have certainly regulated fats and salts and more legislation has been advocated.

Being the fattest country doesn't mean the Feds in particular have the authority to regulate diets.

Which part? The part you described or the motivated, self-made millionaire? (disclaimer: I'm not a Rush fan)

That's a bit disturbing. Michelle Obama is not plump even.

I find it sad that America is the punchline to fat jokes the world over.

A good friend of mine was in Greece over the summer and asked, "Why is it that everyone here smokes and eats so much delicious food, yet not many people are overweight??" Their answer? Because they have a diet that is free of high fructose corn syrup and corn based food for the most part.

Rush is just reflecting what is a growing awakening in America: political hypocrites dictating what we do, think, eat, say, all the while loading up their own wagons... and the two in the WH are about as bad as anyone I've ever seen. BTW, MyBelle does have great arms... bet Barry would give anything to be built like that.

I think I like you more than gs and joe, you don't bring any stupid pictures and your spelling and grammar are respectable.

A trait picked up at Rose Hall; the old Belle is gone now, just memories of English 101, 102 linger.

Something should be done. But not by the federal govt. A person's health is their own responsibility.

To both you and volinbham, how is changing the menu in public schools a form of regulation? Public school is a government institution... they can do with it as they please so long as they fund it. Again, I have no problem with making the menu healthier. American obesity is getting worse and worse... we've shown that we lack the self-respect or discipline to keep ourselves and our children healthy. Unless you have better solutions, this campaign is the best option right now.

I also like that it's increasing agricultural funding for Farmer's Markets. My only qualms with it is the "no desert" policy, but that's about it.

Check out the American obesity statistics and their shift from 1980-2000... it's disgusting.

Just curious, what do you guys think about truancy? If it's not the government's job to worry about our health, then why should it be their job to worry about our children's education?

we obviously need to make school lunches healthier. fries are not a vegetable for christ sake. fact is those lunches are cheap. not just for the price of the food (which is probably comparable to bulk vegetables), but primarily in the cost of making it. switch to a all fresh model and most schools would have to triple their lunch staff and who pays for that? healthy eating starts at the home. the kids want the junk food and the reason for that is that is what they eat at home.

farmers markets are unbelievable rip offs in much of the country. i don't see why we should encourage poor people paying double for their produce.

you think the govt really worries about truancy? not in my state.

On menus I don't have a major problem but do wonder why this is a federal issue.

Funding farmers markets - I don't think the govt has a good track record on stepping in to create markets where they wouldn't naturally survive without the intervention.

On truancy two points: 1) again, it's not a federal issue. 2) school systems are legally obligated to provide education. Making sure students attend is part of that obligation. School systems are not required to ensure a certain BMI so over concern with shaping (no pun intended) someone's weight/BMI is an over step IMHO. I don't have a problem with them not contributing to the problem by serving pizza and tater tots but I don't see it as a school's job to ensure "proper weight" for kids.

If they would stick to teaching what they should be teaching we'd all be better off.

School systems worry about it. You get money for amount of students that you have.
