Rush Limbaugh is embarrassing

are you also going to hire food police to make sure the kids eat their steamed peas and green beans? Ever seen the dumpster behind a school after lunch?

I agree that kids should get healthier food choices in school, but have you ever had to cook for several hundred people at a time?

This the reason why the awesome socialist ideas are enforced with guns and tear gas. Everybody wins!!!!

IMO the fat epidemic in the U.S. has to do with corn subsidies as well as highly processed and frozen foods.

It comes down to personal choice.

They are choosing the higher fat foods that leads to weight gain. Everyone has this experience at some point and has to learn you eat healthy and exercise or you get fat. It's not something the govt needs to get involved with. It's the epitomy of personal responsibility.

see I view it more as him taking a shot at the "do as I say not as I do" bunch currently in the WH. Your kids need to lose weight but she can eat anything she wants. The public needs to cut their vacations and save money but they can take all sorts of expensive trips. I may not agree with his shot but being told what to do all the time by people who don't do the same is getting stupid

You guys act like there is no place in anyone's diet every for fast foods.

The most competitive bodybuilders who get get their bodyfat down to less then 10% for contests have 1 cheat meal a week off their diet, where they eat whatever they want. It's not like this is their diet 5-6 days a week, it was a one day celebration. Nobody got fat from 1 meal.

Corn subsidies is the government IN something that I'm arguing they should be OUT of. Corn based sugars are cheap because of this subsidy and makes it less expensive for food manufacturers to add more sugar. This makes the food taste better but causes more foods to contain more simple carbohydrates which is bad.

The government taxing foods more that THEY think are bad is totalitarian and I'm against those kinds of activities 100%.

That being said, I would be behind the government making good foods cheaper. Rather than subsidizing corn and cattle we should subsidize chicken, fish, broccoli, lettuce, cabbage, etc (IF we are going to subsidize anything at all). I really hate to make a statement like this but I think this is one thing "the market" could use some help with.

I live in the middle of a bunch of cornfields and cannot agree more. It even trickles down to the beef and pork because the cows and pigs are fed corn based feed instead of grass like they eat naturally.

You're right... healthy eating starts at home. Unfortunately, a great deal of parents don't even see obesity as a concern.
If we only had a person assigned at each home to be responsible for preparing each meal and making the healthy choices necessary...

I know how to fix this. We should create a department that monitors the research another department finds while surveying local homes and why they eat certain things. Then the department that monitors the research department should take the information gatherd and give it to another department that forms a test group to see which option would get the family to begin eating the right stuff. This department would give its findings to another department which would then do a internal focus group on how best to implement the findings of the other department into the public. This department would then give its findings to another department that actually implements the findings into the public and gives its weekly results to another department that monitors the day to day results.

And we wonder why we're going broke.

Dude, it's hard to tell if you actually agree with that or not... you seem so hellbent on unhealthy sh*t being the only option in the cafeteria. Organic produce isn't the ONLY healthy diet out there. There are tons of easily preservable, healthy foods that aren't on the menu... why?

All it comes down to is that potato-based lunch items and other junk foods are the cheapest. We care more about money than the health of our children. That's government for you.

when did I ever say that, or even hint at that? I was just ridiculing your notion of having vegetable steamers in public school cafeterias.

I thought potatoes were healthy

Small portions of certain breeds of potatoes are healthy.

they are if they're organically grown then steamed.

Steaming vegetables has been proven to keep the most nutrients in the vegetable. Also, it's a very cheap way to prepare food. I never said anything had to be organic. I just presented the option of local produce.

Oh potatoes and corn as a healthy vegetable is so 10 years ago. Don't you know your in style vegetables? Right now it's all about the steam man. If you're not steam'n, your just living in the past.

Actually the new way of eating vegetables is to go raw.

This is true. Even steaming loses a little bit of nutrition. However, I wouldn't subject children to raw veggies. Only for the hardcore nutritionists.

When I was young I used to pull carrots out of my grandma's garden and eat them right there, dirt and all.
