Except they had beaten the DNR/LNR when they truly were "miners" back in the spring of 2014. After retaking Kramatorsk and Sloviansk the proxy republics were defeated and the only reason why the tide turned was direct involvement by Russian regular troops with advanced Russian equipment.

Again if this was just a matter of protocol why is shipping still limited/cut off and why haven't the prisoners/hostages been returned?

2 Ukrainian intelligence officers were aboard these ships...not the norm...

They have reason to believe this was an orchestrated provocation...

only way they would have known is if Russia responded so harshly. Why would Ukraine send intelligence officers (incredibly broad term there, a radio operator could be intelligence) if they weren't sure how Russia would react?

why does Russia continue to block/fortify the straight?

darn them from invading Crimea and letting Russia's fleet stay there, while signing a treaty with Russia to hand over the nukes to protect said borders.
