Sam Hartman (Wake Forest transfer)

I haven't read through the whole thing, but it seems like an unimportant debate. Milton has already blown his free transfer and is on his last year of eligibility, right? So he's stuck whether we take another QB or not. At least that's how I understand the rules...

A) I think he could still transfer without sitting out since he's graduated.
B) I think the transfer concern is more about Nico or Tayven than Milton.

There's prob more to this than meets the eye. In the short span he started, your scenario certainly holds more than a gallon of water. He has always looked far better coming off the bench. Works in MLB as well. More than one struggling starter found new life as a reliever or closer.

And if that is indeed the case, I wonder how you fix it. Heupel's lack of movement in the portal indicates to me that he thinks he can.

I hate to sound like a grump for the 3rd time in this thread but I still don’t understand why the title says Wake Forest Transfer. OP, can we edit that? Keeps getting my hopes up
Yep. But that's our fault. I doubt Hartman would pull the trigger before the bowl game. Same for UT giving indication that they're pursuing. If it happens and I pray it does, I'll be watching this thread with keen interest after Dec 30.

I really think we are waiting on Milton’s performance in the orange bowl to see if we pursue. ND could be a good spot, but we are definitely a more QB friendly system.

The Orange Bowl isn't a make or break game for Milton.
If Milton goes out there and goes something like 14/31 with 1 td and leaves a bunch of points on the field like the Pitt game in 2021, that’s going to be concerning. I’m not saying he has to go out there and win the game, but I think he needs to show he’s a different player now than he was in the fall of 2021.

You're both right. If he plays poorly in the bowl game, that doesn't mean with absolute certainty that he will fail in 2023. He still has spring and fall. But it's a VERY bad indication that he will.

The more likely scenario...he doesn't play terribly, but he doesn't play lights out. Then we'll spend all offseason on this board going back and forth about him.

Milton wasn't the starter this season and his only start was a month ago. Now he's playing without our best WR (not counting Tillman) and Bru isn't 100%. He'll also be playing against the best front seven he's ever faced. If he airmails 10 balls, then I agree that it's cause for concern, but I've seen too many people that want to write him off if he isn't Hooker 2.0. I just want him to show that he can lead an offense for 4 quarters and take what the defense gives him. Take the deep shots selectively and sustain some drives. He needs to show leadership and the ability to play smart football.

I completely agree. I think Clemson is going to do everything they can to take away our run game. I expect them to key on stopping the run, play press coverage and force Milton to make tough throws. It will be a huge test for him.
