I think this is a great list. LEOs shouldn't be responding to this crap. Police shouldn't be doing funeral escorts. The other items require admin time but don't improve crime or bust criminals. This will not be the reason for Asheville to eat itself as a city.
I have family friends that had the exact same experience in a 5-star hotel in SF. They also said there were drug needles and human feces everywhere. They had been to SF many, many times over the years. They said they would never go back, and this was about 3 years ago. Things have gotten worse since then.Of course it does. However, the point is that when you leave a 5 star hotel in just about any city in the world you don't expect to be told "do not turn right out the front door... it's dangerous that direction". You do in SFO. I do not think I have been told that in any other city in the world where I have had a layover. Not in a broad daylight scenario at any rate.
I'll judge the expanded list, if it ever happens, on it's merits at that time.
Asheville will not descend into a lawless dystopia because of the list I referenced.
I respectfully disagree. The list of things which no longer will get a response by LEOs in Asheville are all things where they come out, file a report, and go about their day (except funeral escorting). At least 3 things from that list have happened to me. I was told by the responding officer(s) "there's not anything we can really do" with 2 of the 3.It’s the “broken window theory”, and yes as has been proven repeatedly in liberal cities all over the country, there will be a descent. How fast and how far are yet to be determined.

I would rather see the resources used in a way where the police force can have an impact.
Hear here!2 points.
First,,,I have visited most of the large shitholes "cities " mentioned earlier in this thread either because of business trips or vacation misadventures. Most smell like spoiled milk, the people are rude and the iconic food venues are usually over rated. If not for the big picture views (the ones where you don't have to see the local inhabitants be they actual or human vermin up close) they have little to offer me and I hope to never revisit any of them.
Second,,,, As a former big box retail store manager or area manager for 2 different companies,,,,, there is no lower form of life than shoplifters. I hate them to their core and if not for the earthly and post life repurcussions would have no problem cracking the outer cranium of most every one of them. I was almost fired for beating the pulp out of one who took a swing on me when I confronted him leaving one of my stores. I did however,,,, enjoy it. A lot.
A lawsuit for what, stopping someone stealing your stuff? Why should a business be open to a lawsuit for stopping a thief? People often forget that the people that pay for shoplifters are the patrons of the store in the form of higher prices to support "inventory losses".I guess it’s cheaper than a potential lawsuit.
