Santi returning!!!

Be careful what you ask for when you ask for something new. If this were Olivier, Uros, or JJJ we were talking about, I would actually agree with you.

In the case of SV, though, it is almost a certainty that we would regress at the position without him. He’s been one of the best perimeter players in the SEC two years in a row. He isn’t the reason this past year’s team didn’t get over the hump.

Maybe we do regress without him, but we've recruited plenty of talent. There's no reason we should see much drop off if Barnes is evaluating and developing talent the way he should. Santi is talented, but he is not program defining or generational talent. He probably isn't even NBA talent

My hope is no…maybe I’m being too hopeful but my hope is we modernize our offense playing 1 big and really spreading the floor out, creating more space and tempo in the process.
I agree with you on modernizing the offense. I was just talking about that particular line-up where someone mentioned Awaka at the 4 and Aidoo at the 5.

He does play good defense, and he brings experience and leadership. He's an above average shooter as well. I'm not trying to under sell his strengths, but no one seems to want to discuss his limitations. He doesn't have great size or elite speed, so while he does plays sound defense, he still can't keep up with faster, more athletic guards and he can't guard multiple positions. He also doesn't have the size, speed, handles, or athleticism to create shots or drive the ball. His shot selection is all over the map at times, often at the end of close games, and he is a streaky shooter. His numbers are good overall, but its feast or famine.

He overcomes some of these limitations because of hard work and determination, but the limitations are still there. He doesn't make this team worse, but he isn't the guy who is going to make or break this program. Someone on the bench may bring something new to the table, and I'm just ready to see what those guys have.
Yes Vescovi has limitations particularly driving to basket and creating shots, but who doesn’t have limitations. He is a plus defender. A plus rebounder for his size despite not being terribly athletic. He is smart, experienced and a knock down perimeter shooter when set. He needs other offensive weapons around him to enhance what he does bring. I hope we land Knecht and Ledlum….teams couldn’t focus so much attention on Vescovi. This past year literally no one worried about how to defend anyone else but him.

Good to see him return, solid defender, knows Barnes system blindfolded. But as mentioned he has limitations and all the SEC coaches have seen him enough to know his skills. I'm just not excited about his return, but okay with it.

Teams have been able to play him differently bc we haven’t had anyone else that could score. Hopefully that changes with the upcoming team

Ideally I don’t think Barnes wants to play Awaka at the 4
I don’t understand why unless the other team is playing small ball and Awaka is too slow to guard. Offensively, Aidoo seems to prefer to play facing the basket with midrange shots. That would allow Awaka to position for offensive rebounds without crowding Aidoo. Of course CRB has forgotten more basketball than I know so I’ll trust his judgment!

Yet the SEC coaches have selected him all conference 2 straight years - you think SV has compromising pictures of some coaches? Also, how come so many of our opponents voiced their game plan was to not let SV beat them? Hard to believe they were all so duped by such an average talented player!

Do you think Aidoo could play the 4 some offensively? Had a decent 10-15 footer and did shoot the 3 ball some earlier in his career although it wasn't a very high rate. Could definitely improve upon that during the off season.
I think that’s Aidoo’s preference to not play on the blocks - doesn’t mean CRB agrees. When there was rumors of him hitting the portal I had to wonder if he was looking for a place that would allow him more outside shooting.

Yep, I agree with this. Aidoo needs to play high post, set picks at top of key and be a rim runner or pick and pop. He has a nice shot and I bet he can extend it enough to be a threat. His FT% is excellent and prefers to face basket. On the low block he looks lost, doesn’t have strong base and basically has one move, which is that little jump hook over right shoulder. Keep him at high post, keep lane open and surround him with perimeter shooters (ie: Vescovi, Gainey, I hope Knecht), a few guys who can attack rim (ie: Ledlum, Mashack, and I hope Knecht), and a playmaker/high assist guy like ZZ who can deliver lobs, and he would be fine.

Coach Barnes said during a media interview at the caravan stop in Nashville that the team will take a foreign trip sometime this summer.
Now that is awesome, is it something similar to what Kentucky did last year in the Bahamas?

Even a blind squirrel finds a nut I suppose 😉

All seriousness though, this caught the staff by surprise…not todays announcement but him informing the staff he’d like to return and them finding a way to make that happen.
i will gladly have him back. There was some talk of it happening but nobody was sure at that time how it would be possible. I think it shocked the entire staff.

Correct, the staff definitely did not see him coming back and didn’t think when told he’d have to walk on that he’d take it…was a surprise to many.

It doesn’t change, that wasn’t the case then, as I said blind squirrel…as of a week ago nothing had been mentioned to the staff about a return.
Sure, maybe not in an official capacity or as a scholarship player. But I'd assume the option to return as a walk-on was always an available possibility.
