Santorum

I honestly think Santorum will get his ass handed to him in at least the popular vote, and very possibly the electoral college as well, if he gets the nod.

There are some parts of the GOP platform I genuinely like, but I don't know how appealing they think they can be with this sort of Pat Robertson crap.

700 Club, baby!

Santorum does have some remarks that are a little out there, but from what I've seen, he hasn't necessarily sought to impose his beliefs legislatively nearly to the degree that is being portrayed.

I hate to go there, but it's kind of funny watching the media have a seizure over his "Satan" remarks while barely raising an eyebrow when the President remarks that Jesus would be inf favor of his tax plan.

Anyone who has any socially conservative ideas are neocon loons who will goose step into schools and force children to read the Bible... but only after they bomb abortion clinics.

Pat Robertson will also be appointed Secretary of State. Obviously, Santorum is a diabolical genius.

Always rely on you for a quality post.

I hope you realize that was hyperbole and/or exaggeration, but to act like Santorum is this evil guy because he has socially conservative ideas and isn't Ron Paul is getting a little far-fetched itself.

I have some problems with him, but he isn't quite the evil guy some make him out to be.

Santorum has actually campaigned on efforts like that to overturn Griswold v. Connecticut, which would allow states to criminalize birth control, or to allow states to ban sodomy, or to require abortion providers to tell patients that "abortion will hurt the baby." He has also stated very explicitly that he thinks morality trumps things like economics and foreign policy.

This sort of stuff is what he actively worked on while he was a senator.

When he was a legislator, dude spent money like a Democrat and seemingly took the rest of his cues from Robertson and Falwell.

I have a problem with the spending issues; that said, some people are socially conservative...

believe it... or not.

He has explicitly said he would not vote to enact such laws. He just thinks they are state issues that the court had no business intervening in.

I'm sorry, but IMO stuff like that is exactly what the courts are there for. States shouldn't be allowed to do things like ban sodomy, or birth control pills (which actually have proven medical uses outside of contraception).

In large, to me, it speaks to the way Santorum views law and the constitution, and it's something I disagree with completely.

Though I disagre, thats at least a valid argument. It's trying to marginalize him by putting him in the evangelical "idiot box" that I think is misguided.

If you think what would happen to Santorum in a general election is bad, wait until you see Romney get passive aggressively flogged day after day over the Mormon church's history regarding women, race relations etc.

I wont view any different than I would anybody else. Just because somebody is a part of a church doesn't mean they fall in line with it.

I know Romney is a moderate. Ive heard him hint at some things that *might* compel me to vote for him if obama is the other choice, specifically dealing with bank restructuring and trade policy among other things.

According to the Paul supporters and liberals (sometimes its hard to tell the difference in the 2) anyone who has any socially conservative views are far right loons.

And will probably kill all gay people.

This is one of those times when I flat out cant relate. The contrast appears so sharp to me, that I don't see where there's much room for fence sitting.

Only when your head is approx. 3 feet up your own rectum.

I don't think social conservatives are far right loons... I just think they aren't real conservatives.

I would guess it's because you don't necessarily get a net shrink. Some facets grow while other get smaller

Like what? Not trying to be difficult, just trying to understand the thought process because I genuinely don't get where along the line social conservatism got tied to big spending anymore than any other line of thinking.

And why can't smaller government exist among the socially conservative?

I guess it comes down to one's proclivity to use the government to enforce social conservatism. If you are socially conservative but don't advocate laws forcing those beliefs/policies on others then it is consistent with small government.

If you want govt. subsidies for being married, want laws against certain otherwise legal sex acts, etc. then it's not consistent with small govt. IMHO.
