Saudi Arabia

You realize it was classified by the Bush administration and that its a resolution in Congress to undo that which is raising the issue, right?

Oh, silly me. Of course you don't.

You don't care.

so he is about to release it without knowing what it contains? Again it seems that if it has come up that he can have a look at it. And if we are releasing this information to a foreign nation it seems like a phone call to Congress would be in order. I don't care about him not knowing it before. I care that he is potentially about to release some classified info without having a darn clue what it is. (and apparently no one knows what it is to actually advise him on it.)

Saudi Arabia Warns of Economic Fallout if Congress Passes 9/11 Bill - NYTimes.com

WASHINGTON — Saudi Arabia has told the Obama administration and members of Congress that it will sell off hundreds of billions of dollars’ worth of American assets held by the kingdom if Congress passes a bill that would allow the Saudi government to be held responsible in American courts for any role in the Sept. 11, 2001, attacks.

The Obama administration has lobbied Congress to block the bill’s passage, according to administration officials and congressional aides from both parties, and the Saudi threats have been the subject of intense discussions in recent weeks between lawmakers and officials from the State Department and the Pentagon. The officials have warned senators of diplomatic and economic fallout from the legislation.

:hi:

I will chalk this up to another case of why I want us to fix our debt problem. This threat shouldn't even be possible, or at least in a dollar amount where it doesn't influence our policies.

I don't know if it's been posted, but if it has, my apologies

Saudi Arabia is threatening economic meltdown to the US if the US allows them to be held accountable on the 9/11 attacks...(lawsuits)

SA's concern is that the families of 9/11 will start filing lawsuits in American courts. Therefore, they have threatened to start selling $750 billion in assets here before they could be tied up by the courts.

In 2001 SA could have created an economic mess here by refusing to sell oil destined for the U.S. or any of our allies. That is no longer a problem since we can be petroleum independent.

Since when did he start using Congress?

No, he's not.

He's honoring the Bush administration decision to classify it.

There is a resolution pending, at least the second I know of, to urge the president to declassify it. You can pretend that the people supporting that are just after justice, and not just grandstanding, but I think we all know better.

And you can pretend that your very narrow criticism is that Obama has not read the 28 pages. Again, we all know better.

Like Nancy Pelosi who probably very well knows what's in those pages?

Yeah, no politics involved there at all.

Don't you get it? Obama not reading a report from 12 years ago means that he has this enormous blind spot about Middle Eastern terrorism and links to the SA regime. For one thing, once that report was issued, no further investigation was done. He has never been briefed on this. There have been no reports of it. It hasn't even come up in the media or in Congress. since then.

Not at all.

The bold is completely false. Reps Thomas Massie (R-KY), Walter Jones (R-NC), and Stephen F. Lynch (D-MA) have been trying for at least 2 years to get these pages declassified. In fact, I bet you can find mention of the classified pages in one of these threads of the politics forum. I'm sure either Ras or myself have brought them up.

The bigger question is, why is the topic gaining steam now? It seems to me the pages implicate both sides of the political spectrum.

Election year theatrics.

Election year theatrics.

Agreed. But I'd be interested to see where the push is coming from. I don't see how either party has anything to gain. Hillary Clinton was just as cozy with the Saudi's as the Bushes. The media didn't seem interested in this issue over the past two years either. Trump/Sanders are the only two that appear to be able to gain... but I don't see the media willing to do those two any favors.

I was being sarcastic as to the claim from the screechers that if Obama does not read these 28 pages, then he doesn't know about the issue.

It is my criticism of him. It's all I've criticized him on WRT this situation and have repeatedly said I would support him keeping it classified.

For some reason you can't address that issue and instead launch into some insane theories.

Ironic you accuse one group of grandstanding then flip out when any criticism is leveled at Obama.

What's a good reason for him not to read the 28 pages?

I think he meant state electoral politics, where these guys and gals can appear to align themselves with the anti Muslim crowd, generally, whilst not actually doing anything.

who said that? Jesus man quit making stuff up. We've all acknowledged he's been briefed and he said he has an idea of what's in there.

The question is why won't he read it himself so he knows exactly what is in there?

No, I mean national level. Who is sponsoring the bill to allow the families to sue the Saudis in court? And furthermore, who is angling to become the next Minority/Majority leader in the Senate?

Who benefits the most from the exposure of this bill?

So yes, election year theatrics that are not at the State level. Schumer is in a safe seat, but if he wants to get "noticed" to move up the ladder, he has to have something big on record.

Yea. I think some underestimate just how fragile the stability of the dollar is.

As to fixing the debt problem.....I've pretty much given up hope on that. Nobody is making any attempts to address our financial problems. It's just more and more debt piled on by D's and R's. My guess is they're going to ride things out as long as they can until what's in place falls apart completely and the next international economic system comes along. Again my guess, a single worldwide currency.
