Scotty Hopson

And hopefully Hopson...I have a feeling Bruce knows what he's doing though. He hasn't been hot after a PG in a while unless you consider Elliot Williams. Then again, he probably couldn't have predicted Ramar's downfall.

Yeah nobody would see that coming. I really think he will come around though. I never thought I would even consider thinking this, but I was wondering if Dane being on the floor with him last year help masked some of the faults that we are seeing from him this year.

I saw Jurick play a few times.. I'm not sure what to expect though since he's only the second high Div. I prospect that I've seen live. He played a team with no one taller than 6'5ish but he dominated and probably had 12 blocks... but he did almost nothing offensively.

The other day against Grace (who has Carter McMasters - 6'11) he had about 24 points and 22 rebounds or that may have been against Tennessee Temple... - yet they are even worse than the team I saw him play against earlier in the year.

Jurick actually played in the same AAU system I did when he was 14 in Florida. I was in the 16u division and was shocked when I came to school here to see him commit to UT, I had wondered what happened to him. It was several years ago but I got a chance to see him play quite a few times. He moved really well for his size, he was about 6'8 then, but was raw on the offensive end. Its hard to tell how big men will turn out when theyre young so I have my fingers crossed.

If that's the case - we're in big trouble... worse than this year.

And don't give me a long list of names. Remember back last year when we thought we were going to get a potential top 5 class? There were so many names out there but we landed the instate solid kid and some guy we didn't even expect to get. If you want Bruce to recruit to his needs than he would need go the JUCO route and pickup a PG.. since that is what we need.

Unless something changes you can mark Leslie McDonald and definetly Farrakhon Hall off that list.

Leslie McDonald off the list? Thats ridiculous. It will be hard considering who we are competing against. But to say to mark him "off the list" at this point is laughable.

Laughable maybe - but if Duke really wants the guy they have him... It's just more than likely we won't get him unless something drastic changes. The guy is even more serious that EW about academics and EW had a 3.8 GPA I believe.

McDonald seems like a EW clone in a lot of aspects. I wouldn't rule out Georgetown for him. Great academics and a 2008 class that was very frontcourt oriented. Just a shot in the dark, but I have a feeling they may be the team to beat. I really like Jamil Wilson from Racine, Wisconsin but I don't what kind of shot we have with him.

Cotton, how would you describe Hopson's game? Is he a slasher, shooter, both? can you compare him to anyone?

He's both. He is best in transition, our out on the wing with a clear-out so that he can go to the basket. He has a very nice, soft shooting touch for a guy his size and 3-point range, and he can also go down low and play with his back to the basket, defend and rebound. He has a light frame, so he's not going to muscle anybody out of the way, but he's smooth and lanky so he seems so slip by, or go over, oponents. He leaps well, plays above the rim, and has good timing for rebounding and blocking shots.

If I had to find a comparison, I'd say he's a little Scotty Pippen and a little Kevin Garnett, at least on the highschool level.

Just a quick update:

Hopson had 27 Saturday night in an upset loss to cross-town rival Hopkinsville in the city Christmas tournament. It dropped the Blazers to 8-2 on the year.

The paper didn't mention it, and with Holiday commitments, I couldn't attend. I'll see if I can find out whether or not he was there.

The first post mentions UT was there not Bruce specifically. We are spending alot of time in Hopkinsville, hope it pays off.

I just talked to a guy who attended all of the tournament games. He said that although he saw someone he thought was a UT coach (an older guy?) he did not see Pearl at any of the games.

UHA beins play in the highly regarded King of the Bluegrass tournament today in Louisville.

King of the Bluegrass starts today

I just looked through that Cat's Pause post, and there is a link to video of the UHA/Lafayette game at Hoopfest on it (Pearl was at that tourney, and the Oak Hill game was on ESPN.) It is the entire game, and I couldn't fast-forward, but for anybody who wants to see it, here it is:

Hoop Fest Game 12

Hopson is #32, a storied number in UHA basketball history, I might add :)

is CBP in it?

I watched him at the King of the Bluegrass today. I saw why people seem to think he's lazy or disinterested. He often looks like he is just standing around, but the reality of it is that he was so athletically superior that he could guard his man and kinda play a 1-man zone whenever possible to position himself to help. That brand of D looks lazy to the eye of someone who's never played D like that (I just play in pickup games - and not with that athleticism).
He does look like he is bored and disinterested - but, his game play is fine. He just has a quiet style. He has very quick hands - numerous key deflections / steals down the stretch. He looks ready to explode whenever he gets the ball - spent much of the night passing out of double teams and finished with 18 points - they won 65-63. The one thing he doesn't appear to be is a vocal on-court leader - stays very quiet. But, he did make enough plays to lead his team in victory. I think he would definitely fit into Pearl's system. I didn't recognize any college coaches in the stands.

That's a pretty good point; with his athleticism, he does so many things that seem effortless that it is easy to assume he doesn't put forth any effort.

I had a similar take on him after watching him play last year and during the summer. As I posted earlier in this thread, though, in the one game I have seen him play live this year, he was much more intense, particularly with the game on the line.

I just read on catspause that Wednesday was the end of some "dead period." Coaches couldn't attend Wednesday but can attend on Thursday.

Hopefully Bruce will make it tomorrow to Scotty's game and let Scotty see him. I watched that video of Scotty and he would fit BP system VERY nicely. When he was in transition he looked his best but he can't put it on the floor and create just as good. He has a pretty good looking shot, nice form, and good lift. Overall you can tell he is way above everyone on the floor in terms of everything (athleticism especially) and part of his "lazy side" could come from their team basically has 5 guards in the starting lineup and he is forced to play post on the defensive side which I'm sure is frustrating. His coach also doesn't utilize everything he brings and doesn't have run enough isolation which draws double teams and so on that would help their team.

I WOULD LOVE TO HAVE THIS KID IN ORANGE!! Go get him Bruce!

I couldn't get their link to work, but a catspause poster cited an article saying Pearl was also recruiting Hopson's teammate Edmonson. I couldn't find an Edmonson on rivals, so that could be misspelled. If I make it to the tourney on Thursday, I'll try to look into that.

I think he is a fine player. He just doesn't look like he is having fun, but I could be reading him wrong. I guess I expected a little more charisma. :dunno:

Bluegrass Insider | Hopson to take his time

ecruiting Update: Tyshawn Edmonson

With all the focus on Hopson, this 6-foot-3 senior point guard is sometimes lost on radars of players, coaches and recruiters.

He certainly isn’t lost on his coach.

“He’s the best kept secret in the state,” McCoy said. “He’s a definite Division-I player, the question is at what level. I’m sitting here wondering where everyone is at. He’s going to get a lot of looks.”

The Blazers’ trigger man, Edmonson tallied 13 points and four steals versus Adair County before fouling out.

Edmonson, who sports offers from Murray State, Morehead State, Georgetown (KY), TCU, Western and Eastern Kentucky, is also being targeted by Bruce Pearl at Tennessee.
