Scotty Hopson

As I posted earlier, the UHA coach was trying very hard last year to "package" Hopson and Edmunson. At that point, I know Pearl wasn't interested.

The kid seems to developed over the summer, though, and that might have changed. He is a nice highschool player, but not nearly the sure-fire lock that Hopson is.

I didn't watch the Lafayette video past the first quarter (and they were zoning the Blazers that whole time, which could explain No1Fan's take,) but against Clarksville UHA ran a lot of isolations for Hopson, giving him the ball on the right wing and clearing out.

It turns out that the kid's name is spelled Edmondson. And, the Louisville paper erroneously still labelled Hopson as an MSU commit. In my world, being committed means not talking to other schools. I will go tonight and report back. :)

Borrowing a word from the VN Guru of Basketball, through 3 quarters, Hopson's performanace tonight was wretched. He picked up 2 quick fouls in the first quarter and went to the bench. More of the same in the third quarter - fouls #3 and #4 and to the bench. UHA still maintained about a 5-10 point lead without him.
When Hopson returned with about 4 or 5 minutes left, he exploded and finished with 21 points and 8 rebounds. The intensity that was missing on Wednesday was there in the fourth quarter. 2 straight dunks brought the crowd to life - first dunk was the most impressive - he exploded on the baseline and basically jumped over everybody for a 2-hand slam. UHA won by 6 to advance to the semifinal round of the 16-team tournament. The second dunk was a steal and a breakaway. Pitino was there, along with Steve Masiello. I didn't recognize any UT coaches. I guess that would have been a big trip on the eve of a cross-country trip for a big road game.

Ok...Tyshawn Edmondson. He is ok and had 14 points. He guarded a bigger player, resulting in a few hard-to-watch moments under the basket. I had the same take as Cotton - nice high school player but not exactly a sure-fire D-1 lock.
There is at least one player in our sophomore class who will not stay through his senior season, so I figure Pearl will have 2 or more scholarships available for the Class of '09. If we get both of them, worst-case scenario is there's room on the bench for Edmondson; best-case scenario is that we do need a backup PG for next season. It would obviously be tough take him, though, if a better option is ready to commit, but that would be news to all of us.
He did have 3 blocks and 4 steals to go with 13 points last night. The full box score for tonight isn't up on the tournament website yet, because they goofed and re-posted another game's stats. King of the Bluegrass Holiday Classic |*Fairdale, KY

I don't think UK has ever gotten a player from UHA. Their players usually leave the state. This is Isiah Victor's school. And, Pearl wasn't there, but Hopson did catch a post-game look at me in my orange. Hey, it's great to be a Vol - maybe something rubbed off. :p

thanks for all the updates UKVOLS..
so Edmondson doesnt seem to be a UT caliber player.. but if we must then we MIGHT offer him a scholly..

IMO, i'd rather just land a JUCO PG..

I'm betting that Bruce is going to search Juco and see what he can come up with and if he doesn't come up with one, he can take someone like Edmondson or not take anyone. This way you can recruit Hopson and him at the same time and won't have to do much travelling.

But i think we wind up with a Juco Pg. We were recruiting a guy named Bobby Maze before he just commited to Maryland and he was a Juco PG. We shall see though.

Yeah, I'd be surprised if he became a major contributor at a big program, but who knows? I'm not going to pretend to be a scout. EDIT: Edmondson had 14 points, 8 rebounds, 4 assists, and 3 steals last night. The competition, Madison Central, is a Top 10 team in the state.

any thing new on how we stand with hopson?

Ever since it got out that Gillispie has not contacted Hopson personally and doesn't seem to be seriously interested, our friends at catspause have bashed Hopson's attitide, effort, and desire, with other posters accusing the bashers of trying to drive him away. Catspause makes an interesting source when it's a KY recruit. My best educated guess is that it is between us and UofL.

Victor was heavily recruited by Pitino at UK; he chose UT mainly because KO had gotten on him early, while UK waited until after the season started. He told me that he would have committed early to UT, but he was afraid that if he did, he would foul out of every game his senior season.

Sergio Luyk was offered by UK but chose to go to St John's because he had an aunt in NYC.

Ravi Moss is the only player I know of from UHA that suited up for the Cats. He was technically a walk-on, but that was mainly due to his academics being good enough to qualify for a scholarship. He played quite a bit his last two years.

Those are the only 3 I know of that have gotten any interest from the Cats until Hopson. UK isn't known for recruiting this part of the state heavily. Lamont Barnes (Temple,) Harold Swannegan (Notre Dame,) Darren Allaway (Stanford,) and Greg Buckner (Clemson,) are a few of the more talented to come out of the school that never got a glance from Lexington.

Great night for Hopson and Edmondson. The competition included Noel Johnson, Rivals #30 in the Class of '09. Hopson had 35 points, 20 rebounds, 2 assists, 3 blocks, and 6 turnovers, playing the whole game. Edmondson had 25 points, 9 rebounds, 2 assists, 1 block, 6 steals, and 6 turnovers, playing all but 30 seconds.
Edmondson must be one of UHA's better defenders, because he was often guarding Johnson, after guarding the top frontcourt player last night too. Johnson, who appears to be a UofL lean, had 25 points and just 2 rebounds, and he fouled out.
Pitino was back, this time with Walter McCarty. A catspause poster said "Coach Cal" was also there. I'll assume that's Calipari. There was also a small, random splattering of UT fans in the crowd - hopefully Hopson will pick up on the fact that it's great to be a Vol.
Edmondson's block was huge. UHA led by 4 in the final minute, and in backcourt, 2 defenders were trying to foul Edmondson when one of them hit the floor. A charge was called. I did not have a good view, but the UHA coach was quickly hit with a technical, causing the ref to draw static from yours truly. The player hit 1-2 FTs, but Edmondson then had a great block in the guy's face to pretty much seal the win.
Edmondson looked like a really nice player to me tonight, but I'm not a scout. Judging by his Rivals profile, if he pans out somewhere, he would have flown under the radar bigtime.
UHA plays in the final on Saturday night against Louisville Male. BTW, Wesley Witherspoon's team lost two straight and is going home. Jurick's team also lost two straight in Lexington.

I read in the newspaper that he had 19 points on Thursday, but East Ridge lost to Louisville Central 68-44 in a consolation game.

cotton do u think we land scotty

I think we've got a shot. I haven't talked to him or his new coach since he failed to sign with MSU, but we were a strong consideration before he committed and seem to be strong, still.

whats his current size?? 6-6 200.. or what?

He's an honest 6'7" and long and lanky.

I think the "problem" with Ty is that 6'3" good athletes with a good handle and a nice shot just aren't that hard to find. He's got a nice game but there isn't that "wow" factor that separates him from the 200 other 6'3" good athletes with a good handle and a nice shot. That's not to say he won't turn into a great college player; he very well might. He just might have a hard time separating himself from the pack in the eyes of scouts.

That's a very good point. And, I'll probably go to the KOB final tonight in orange. Surely, 4 straight days of playing in front of me is enough to get someone to come to UT. :birgits_giggle:

Tough loss for Hopson's team in the final. Male beat UHA 53-51 on a running floater in the lane with 2 seconds left. Hopson's half-court shot then rimmed out. I recorded the winning play, and upon further review, the kid clearly walked. Well, Georgetown didn't get called either. Hopson had 19 points and was the tourney MVP. He and Edmondson both made the all-tourney team. Edmondson had a nice game - multiple blocks and steals, but I don't have a box score. Masiello was there from UofL. There were also a few UofL fans holding up various "We Want Scotty" signs before the game. Hopefully, the Hopsons taped the Gonzaga game. I'm heading back to Florida on Sunday, so there's my contribution to the Scotty recruitment thread. :eek:k:

Scotty Update:

From MARC MAGGARD....

I do not agree with the OP either. UK isn't really recruiting Hopson that hard....almost not at all. I think they want to take players who are known for going all out all the time given their experiences this year. Toss in the fact that Hopson won't come out and publically decommit from Miss....even though there is about zero chance he goes there.

Tennessee is going to be VERY tough to beat for Hopson. G Tech is out now totally...the guy who was steering Hopson has been cut out (good for Hopson). Louisville is coming on as is Texas, but I doubt Tennessee loses this one.

This info is only a few hours old.

Looking good!
