Scotty Hopson

Following a round of Hopson-bashing posts that have become typical since it got out that Billy G was not heavily pursuing Hopson, this poster offered more insight:

Re: Scotty Hopson ejected
For people who don't know Scotty, keep your mouths shut!! I've known the young man for 5 years. He is no punk and in no way a Carruth-type. I just mentioned to the UHA principal that people are calling him a "punk" and a "thug." She became irrate asking where people got that!! She said he had never been in trouble, was a good student (who I've heard is fully qualified for next year) and is a "very nice young man!" Scotty did show some attitude last year but this year has done much better, has kept his mouth shut and is well-liked by his school mates. I blame a large part of last year's problems on the former UHA coach who did nothing to control him and his on court attitude. Like most kids, he has a little bounce in his step when he dunks or scores and celebrates some times but not like last year. He is only 17 and still maturing. He has made some comments in the media that seem very self-centered which I believe is mainly a lack of guidance in what is politically correct (kind of like in Bull Durham "learning your cliches.")

JHyamo, you sir, don't know the young man and if you think he isn't good enough, you also haven't seen him play!! He would be the best athlete at UK since Derek Anderson.

I wasn't at the game last night so I can't comment on those technicals which seem questionable. I don't believe he has received any other technicals this year. Just because he hasn't committed to UK is no reason to bash him.

One thing about UHA players--they are always in good shape academically. In fact, as of a couple of years ago (I do not know for sure for about the past two years, but I cannot imagine it has changed,) every single student in the senior class has graduated in good standing and has gone on to college except one, who entered the military, since the school's inception in 1973. It is a small environment, but they do an excellent job of preparing kids to go on to the next level academically.

From what I've seen of Scotty, he is polite, reserved, and mild-mannered off the court. He can be emotional on the floor, but I haven't seen anything that would flag a problem. I also know the UHA headmaster and her husband, who is also involved with the school and knows the kids, very well; they are trustworthy people, and they do think a lot of Scotty.

It sounds to me as if uniformed posters on catspause are airing some sour grapes.

Rumor is UK is going to try and get back in the Hopson sweepstakes... Hope we can withstand the push. If Hopson likes and wants to play in an uptempo style, UK would not be a good decision. Wonder if not recruiting him for months and suddenly jumping in hurts there chances as well.

I'm sure he would no longer be viewed as a lazy player with an attitude problem if UK makes such a push.

IMO, Hopson is not going to UK to put his future in the hands of a rumored to be alcoholic as well as a borderline incompetent coach based on the performance of the KY team he is coaching now. IMO, the performance has nowhere close to equalled what it should be even though the talent is down from past years. If this kid wants to ignore all that and go there anyway, it's his problem. I would hope that he is smarter than that.

UK has been on him since 2006 summer with an offer on the table for some time. There is still a huge allure for a Kentucky HS player to go to Lexington.

I have a feeling that it's going to get worse in Lexington before it gets better. I see them bottoming out toward the end of this year, they wont even make the NIT.

Here's the update on the KY front.
Kentucky New Era — News that hits home

It essentially says that as of today, Billy G has not contacted Hopson. However, according to Marc Maggard, that is true for now, but Billy G plans to make the right calls to prepare the best recruiting pitch, and then he will contact Hopson.

Here's hoping that Billy G is coming on so embarrassingly late that Hopson will turn UK down and opt for brighter (orange) pastures.

at this point he cant be feeling the love from the blue mist. Surely we can keep him from going to Starkville, just taking a visit there should have him headed for the Hill.

If that's the case - the kid is a moron if he is swayed by a close win at home when months and months have been put towards this kids recruitment.

He would have eliminated Kentucky for their 8-9 record if he took that into account.

So to answer your question - there's no way that did that much to his decision.

Can you imagine are lineup if we landed this guy and then Leslie McDonald next year. If everybody stayed we would have Ramar, Tyler, Weezy, Duke, JP, Tatum, Tabb, Wooldridge (sp?), Jurick, Hopson, McDonald, and B-Will. That would be flat out unfair.

Obvisouly, we are living on predictions. But this is a message board. Landing Hopson and McDonald would be potentially nasty.

G Ramar
G McDonald/Tatum
G Hopson/Prince
F Tyler/Woolridge
F Chism/Williams/Crews

I talked to the UHA coach this morning. His take was that UT is still right in the thick of things for Hopson. He also indicated that there was more ill-will towards Kentucky because of a cancelled visit to watch Scotty practice.

He also thought UT might take Edmonson whether Scotty signed with UT or not.

Thanks for the info Cotton. I think we have a good chance to land Hopson. It will be interesting to see if we take Edmonson or Verdell Jones ( we're in his top 3 with Uk and Minnesota) or we take neither and hold the scholarships.

For anybody in the Lexington/Richmond area that is interested, UHA plays its first round game in the All A Classic tomorrow at noon eastern at EKU.

UHA has won that tournament 8 times in the 18 years it has been held.
