Season is half over, what does the remainder of the season look like?

I think one could say Indiana might be after what the Hoosiers went and did to Penn State.

Then again saying that would also depend on what that team does for the rest of the year.

Correct me if I'm wrong, but hasn't Indiana been a bottom tier team in the big 10 for quite some time? I know their basketball program is extremely good, but I rarely ever hear anything about their football.

I wasn't claiming them to be a great team by any means; I was saying that (so far) they might be a better team than Vanderbilt is this season.

I think Spurrier is different this year. He looks sullen. He's having problems keeping discipline within his program. His best player seems to be playing to preserve his draft status.

I haven't seen the old Spurrier this year. Kind of miss it to be truthful.

Someone also posted a link to a segment of his coach's show on TV. He was drunk enough for his speech to be slurred and his statements to be kind of "off".

I'm thinking he's done.

Chris Lowe addressed this Monday on 104.5 (I think it was Monday). Discussing the likelihood that Spurrier was drunk, Lowe said that he didn't think there was anything unusual about Spurrier sounding like that.

I didn't hear or see the interview, so I can pass no judgment but I ultimately agree with you. I think Spurrier and Richt are in the final legs of their coaching journey. I think they both retire soon.

I think richt was playing scared against us on sat. Why would he go for a fourth and whatever in the first half of the game? He has a kicker that can kick a 50 plus field goal and we had not shown that we could play with them when he went for it on the fourth down. I agree, i think richt is almost done and so is spurrier.

I probably shouldn't say who I am employed by. I hate to be cagey, but I'll leave it at that.

Second thing, before you try to reinvent the wheel, read other posts that discussed the development of this analysis (search for: statistics tell the story, or some permutation of that). Also, read cfbmatrix.com. Dave Bartoo has a whole explanation on everything you discussed.

No problem...I thought maybe you thought I already knew who your employer was. It's definitely not a big deal.

I did a quick check of the cfbmatrix site. Stumbled across this statement talking about the "coach effect". Synder of Kansas State is one of the best, no surprise there...but look who THE WORST is. LOL!

The king is Snyder. The guy makes me crazy. No one is even in his area code. Fitzgerald and his freak road record is the only one you could even consider near that pedestal. On the flip side no one was even close to Mack Brown and his negative coach effect until USC decided to keep Lane through the sanctions period. Even though the scholarships at USC were restricted, their total recruited talent was still miles ahead of the rest of the PAC12

I keep hearing this over and over about Richt. They were a heartbeat from playing for (and likely winning) the MNC last year, and they are a top contender this year, though injuries may derail that.

It truly puzzles me....

Richt is definitely not almost done, lol.

Good. I would prefer him to stay. Richt is a decent coach but with the talent he has he always manages to lay an egg and never get to the NT.

Spurrier can GTFO. I don't see South Carolina ever getting a better coach.

He actually said during the interview after the game that he was "glad he decided to come back". It is no secret that he has considered retiring.

I wouldn't say that Richt lays eggs. He has a history of performing consistently at the level that his talent would predict. He is a talent +0 coach. Yes, he might lose a game he should win, but he then wins a game he should lose so it is a wash.

Bartoo and I typically agree. He and I have had several brief conversations. We part ways on some methodology, but generally follow the same arc. I agree that Brown (and Kiff) were the worst coaches. I had Dooley as a -4 coach and Bartoo said that he had him as a -1.5. To date, that is our biggest disagreement.

Snyder does over-perform, no doubt. But he also doesn't recruit all that well (mid-60s). So, his effect on talent is impressive but he will never get enough talent to really be a serious contender. He is proof that there is a limit on a coach's ability to positively effect talent, where Dooley and Brown are proof that there is almost no limit on a coach's ability to negatively effect talent.

Snyder most definitely recruited well enough to be a contender in the late '90s and early 2000s. He recruited a disproportionate number of JUCO players back then, however, and I am not sure how accurate recruiting data from that period was in terms of JUCO evaluation. He just turned 74, so competitors can now leverage the "he-probably-won't-be-there-for-all-four-years-of-your-career" card quite easily. Nevertheless, the job he did of transforming Kansas State, one of the historic "arm pits" of college football, into a perennial top 10 program (1997-2002) will go down as one of the greatest coaching performances in the annals of college football.

These are all true statements. Remember though, that this numerical coaching effect numbers typically cannot determine anything pre 2002, and very little pre 2005 due to the availability of meaningful recruiting numbers. As a result, whatever Snyder did prior to those dates is likely not reflected in Bartoo's numbers and is certainly not reflected in mine.

Lowe is being kind. If he wasn't drunk then he may be having some senility or Alzheimer's. It is on Youtube. Check it out and see what you think.

furthermore, all this board does is speak condescendingly of damn near every team in america except alabama and of damn near every coach in america except nick saban.

You... are condescending in the way you talk about UT. It is subtle but it is there... and I've watched it for 5 years now.

As for the statement above... it is OUR board. This is a VOL fan board. I even said previously if you were doing your schtick on a Gator board then you'd just be "being a fan". When you come to someone else's board and CONSTANTLY imply that they just aren't quite up to YOUR standard.... and probably never will be... is when it becomes different.

Sounds like you might end up with broken kneecaps or concrete overshoes.

I would love to treat you to a beer or two sometime and hear more about it. As long as my name never gets mentioned to Vito Corleone.

Give 'em hell, SJT.

Here's my less interesting take.
SCAR is beatable but I wouldn't burn the mattresses if we lose.
Bama, not this year.
Mizzou is a win but they won't be in the top 25 when we play anyway.
Auburn is LOADED with good players. Home advantage may even the playing field though, then it's a toss up. A win here would be an upset.
Vandy is toast.
UK. Is still UK.
3-3 is probable. But an upset vs SCAR or Auburn could happen.

Ill take the beer, anytime. Prefer jack and coke however. That's just a family tradition.

I wish the story was seedy and involved Italian family names with lots of meats, sauces and seasonings but I am afraid it isn't that sexy. If it is, I am not privy to it.

I just respect my employer's privacy. I have a great job and don't want to endanger it. Loose lips sink ships as they say.

UPDATE:

Don't let the new AP rankings fool you. The remaining schedule is still a likely prediction of 4-2 for UT.

Below is an update on this discussion, with no real surprises.

1) SCAR at 19.75 beats Arkansas at 33.25 (predicted)

2) Bama at 2 beats Kentucky at 50.25 (predicted)

3) Mizzou at 34.75 beats a severely dinged-up UGA at 11 (not predicted but understandable, and the Tigers lose Franklin in the process)

4) Auburn at 7.25 beats Western Carolina at *** (predicted)

5) Vandy almost lost their bye week (predicted)

6) Kentucky loses to Bama (see above - predicted)

Which 4 teams do you think we beat?

If the Vols can somehow eek out 2 SEC wins it will be a improvement over the last 2 years. But right now, the next 4 SEC games seem daunting and all of them will be ranked. Getting to a bowl will require winning 3 SEC games to become 6-6, it just doesn't get any easier for the Brick Mason's, does it?
