September 10, 2024 Presidential Debate Thread. (Insert snarky subtitles here.)

šŸ˜‚ dude if Kamala had three people pressing her she would fall to pieces. Trump was stupid last night, didnā€™t help himself. Kamala is a candidate that has waffled on every single major issue she stood on. You talk about Trump lying, every damn thing about Kamala is a lie. Package up in a pretty package acceptable for consumption by idiots that donā€™t see how bad things have gotten. Housing, food, energy prices are up. Youā€™ve got wars in multiple areas of the world now. Youā€™ve got millions of illegals being shipped in to the country committing crimes. Is there any major metric that youā€™re better off by today than you were four years ago?

Hell Iā€™m not even mentioning the secret service bungling, the fbi screwups, the Afghanistan withdrawal. This administration has demonstrated their incompetence over and over yet some people defend them. This is the absolute bottom of the barrel politically right now.
Ramble all you want but he looked terrible and the reviews are bad as well. He stinky can't contain himself and looked pretty stupid most of the night. It will cost him

But yes, I'm better off now than 4yrs ago. Had nothing to do with govt policies but since you asked

Trump did fall for some baiting. But that was only to distract from the fact that Harris has a nothing platform and a terrible record. All she did in the debate was to cement herself as an empty suit. No substance as a person, or a politician.

I will take a page from Luthers playbook and vote against Harris. Since I was denied the opportunity to vote Kennedy or Gabbard.

if Trump was smart he could have turned some of that distractions back in on itself or against Kamala. it was only a distraction because he let it be. and if he was any less of an empty suit he would have used it to his advantage.

I agree. He missed opportunities to press her on issues. He tried on late term abortion. Spent way too much time on defending his rally sizes. He also pressed on immigration but a lot of the average voters have no idea WTF he was talking about with immigrants eating peopleā€™s pets. He had to contrast what Kamala has said in the past and the way sheā€™s voted in the past with what her platform is today. He didnā€™t do that and made it more about his ego.

I still think he is by far the better candidate in this election but he didnā€™t help himself in this debate. Couldā€™ve pointed out gun buybacks, asked about where money was coming from for all of these programs she was proposing, asked how many more taxpayer dollars are going to illegal immigrants. Not one single person watching the debates gave a crap about rally sizes but he fell into that trap and wasted time better used for attacking her past record. His closing statement was by far his best moment in the debate he shouldā€™ve started there and pressed her the whole night on why she hasnā€™t done anything sheā€™s proposing.
Any staff who helped prepare him should be fired.

That ramble was ALMOST on DonOLD's level. At least everyone acknowledged Sleepy Joe needed to go after his debate. People defending an idiotic clown who is a narcissistic, pathological liar is wild!

This is what I don't understand....why don't you want this? We don't want a principled Kamala Harris who is going to die on a hill of price controls. That's the most dangerous kind of politician. I'll take a flip-flopper any day over a crusader, unless it happens to be the 0.0001% of politicians who actually has great ideas. We want a Kamala Harris who will say, "It really seems like people want me to get tough on the border, so I'm going to get tough on the border."

People hold this against her because too many are just cheerleaders rooting for a team and care about beating her and winning more than they actually care about being tough on the border.

You guys hold this against her because you care about beating her and winning more than you actually care about being tough on the border.
well the issue is if you believe Kamala will actually get tough on the border, or whatever particular problem it is.

a flip flopper is just pandering to get elected. not actually changing their stance or actually setting policy down the road.

the best thing would be to have politicians who are actually principled so you know what you are voting for. that way we could also hold them accountable when they don't do it. as it is now the acceptability of flip flopping makes the promises during the campaign pointless.

He's not rambling. Trump is a child with zero impulse control. The debate system in this country is broken and last night was an embarrassment. Two things can be true at once.

Show me where the polling is different on the border than it was 3 years ago when she did absolutely nothing. It's not. She didn't do the job that she was supposedly appointed to do. Shes not principled, she's a panderer of the highest order. She didn't wake up one day and decide to listen to voters on immigration and fracking.

Well, we've seen the Biden administration implement multiple policies designed to get tough and they've tried to pass more, but failed. Not saying I like any of the policies, but popular opinion has already moved that meter.

I agree with your last sentence, but that's just not the world we live in, unfortunately.

Edit: I also kinda don't agree. If politicians were honest and reliably stuck to their guns, do you trust Americans to vote the best ideas into office? Because if you vote in the wrong crusaders...that's when we become Venezuela.

My problem with her is the same as my problem with Tulsi Gabbard: because of the flopping, I donā€™t know what she will actually do and what she will actually prioritize.

Her platform seems to be the tail wagging the dog (šŸ½ļø). Itā€™s like she has a platform that is entirely crafted around coalition building rather than having a set of core issues that appealed to a base of voters and then building her coalition with common ground on other issues.

See e.g. Bernie Sanders who was all about the minimum wage and then built a broader base of voters with other progressive issues.
Juxtapose with Joe Biden who ran as a centrist but then took office and claimed he had a broad progressive mandate.

I prefer Harris winning because her lack of a cult following (and therefore inability to escape accountability), the senate, and the Supreme Court will all limit her ability to do harm. But I donā€™t care for her as a candidate and itā€™s directly related to her inconsistency and inability or unwillingness to articulate a good reason for it.

I'm thankful everyday that we live in a country where it doesn't really matter all that much who the President is. There are many countries where that isn't the case. You are right that so much of politics now is akin to sports - people want their team to win, get excited when they do and upset when they don't, and their lives before and after the victory or loss aren't any different.

Also, anybody who considers themselves extremely patriotic and proud to be an American sells the country extremely short when they say things like "if XYZ is elected they'll ruin the country" or "President XYZ is ruining the country." This country is far too great to be ruined by any politician, especially a politician like Trump, Harris, or Biden. The United States is not, and never really has been, a great country because of the people who run the government being good people, competent, etc. More frequently, it is a great country in spite of the people who run the government.

You're left of center, correct? I was moreso talking about Republicans wanting her to be a flip-flopper. If you are a liberal, it makes a lot more sense that you would want her to be reliably liberal.

Regarding the moderators, the Republican dude on the CNN panel just had a great line. ā€œItā€™s really hard to blame the refs when you arenā€™t making jump shots.ā€
More like youā€™re shooting a corner 3 and get speared into the bench area and the refs didnā€™t call a foul.

The system has pretty much developed an immunity against the threat of a principled politician. It selects for psychologically damaged people whom thrive in it.

Yeah, I agree with all of this, and my "we'll be Venezuela" comment is only about a hypothetical in which socialists control congress and POTUS. It's just a thought exercise. POTUS on its own doesn't matter that much.
