Serious QB discussion

You’ll be tired of Nico too…if your WR can’t sore sore it doesn’t matter
So guys have that IT factor. I don’t know what IT is. Joe doesn’t have IT.

Some players make everyone around them better. Some dont

I was finally able to watch the game from Milton's POV... long story why I simply couldn't watch it live 😭 Anyway, if Alabama Joe Milton is the one we get for the rest of the year, then I'm content with that. He didn't play perfect. There were two throws to the endzone in the first half, which were a complete miss on an out route for pass attempt 13 then the overthrow to Warren on the corner route for attempt 16, that caused us to put up FGs instead of TDs. I think he played well enough to win despite those two major hiccups. In fact, I think this was his best game in a TN uniform period... even better than the Clemson game.

For those clamoring for Nico, let's talk about Quinn Ewers getting injured at TX.

5*, highly touted, true freshman, top tier family pedigree Arch Manning is ready and right there, of course.

Not so fast, Maalik Murphy, a 4* redshirt freshman is QB2 at TX and replaced Ewers.

WHAT? Arch Manning is one of the highest rated QBs ever! How can he not be ready to take over?

It's very possible Nico isn't ready either.

Tell me if I’m wrong, but I know that Taj Boyd wanted to come here, but Kiffin told him to go elsewhere.

I think Trevor Lawrence wanted to come here, but I think it was Butch who was not interested.

Then did Penix not want to come, but Pruitt didn’t want him?

Am I incorrect on the last two Lawrence and Penix?
None of that matters, but no Lawrence wasn't told no by Butch. We were in his top 3 and he chose Clemson. Taj Boyd wasn't coming here after Fulmer was fired. Kiffin ran a pro-set.

Serious question. What kinda production did you expect from Milton??? Keep in mind he had not started 10 games in before this year total..

Barring an injury to Joe, Nico's first start will be August 31, 2024 versus UTC.
Big question is who his backup will be? Not sure anyone from the portal wants to sign on as a backup. A true FR in all probability. And with our OL and schedule, he'd better get a lot more early season reps than Nico did this year.

The QBs they tried to add this year via portal did not want to come because we had Nico on the roster. Be surprised if we could entice anyone of quality to come and sit behind Nico. It is an issue...

Woof. I am glad you aren't our QB coach then. If 0 points in the second half is part of the best performance of Milton's career, then we need a new QB even more than we think.

Statistically, he had more total yards than any other game, he had his second highest completion percentage (minimum 30 attempts), his second highest pass attempts, his most rush attempts, and is tied for his second most rush yards all in his career. All that in and of itself is reason enough to dismiss the stupid idea that he was at fault for the 2nd half. I'd say until you can provide evidence he did not do his job, then you can be ignored.

12-19 in the second half and 0 TDs. They don't award points for gaining yards. His job is to score points which he and the offense failed to do in the second half. You set the bar at, "best performance of his time at UT," which is simply ridiculous. He wasn't terrible on Saturday, but to beat elite teams, we need him to be better.

I can't believe I'm the one actually defending Milton now in this thread lmao. You act like they award points to only the QB. His job is not to "score points," considering his job is to simply make the right read and throw an accurate ball to the receiver. Points will come when he not only executes but also when the rest of the team executes with him. That's it; it's not complicated. This are my notes on the 2nd half. I only see 3 of the 19 passes where he did not hold up his end of the bargain. If you actually pay attention to the game, then you'll also realize the routes he targeted and even the frequency of those routes targeted were largely the same as was done in the 1st half. If you disagree this was his best performance, then you might want to provide some evidence not only for your own position but to also provide a reason why we should disregard all his career highs. You'd rightfully be laughed out of a film review if you stupidly went in there and went, "Derp. He was only 12-19... let's bench Milton".

232IncompleteGoodVerticalWell placed ball; this was an obvious missed PI call as that DB had his arm wrapped around the receiver’s hips for a lot of yards there.
242CompleteAverageCurlDecent(ish) ball placement again. Receiver probably misjudged this one.
252CompleteAverageSwing
262CompleteAverageScreen
272CompleteGreatCrossingThis was a perfectly placed ball by Milton to the TE.
282CompleteAverageScreen
292IncompleteBadVerticalHe just flung this one and ended up being badly off.
302IncompleteBadCurlOverthrow
312IncompleteAverageCurlThrown a few yards back but the DB made a good play on the ball.
322CompleteAverageOutDecent(ish) ball placement as Squirrel had to spin for this one too.
332CompleteGoodSlantWell placed ball and an unnecessarily conservative catch by the WR.
342IncompleteGoodVerticalLooked to be another missed PI call as the DB was riding the WR before the ball was even up in the air… the ball would likely be in a great spot for the WR if he was not slowed up by the uncalled PI.
352CompleteGoodCrossWell placed ball again but the receiver unfortunately stumbled after securing it.
362IncompleteAverageInThis ball was thrown too hard but understandable given the pressure… I do think this is again a missed PI call as the last time I checked you can’t have your arm wrapped around a receiver’s hip.
372IncompleteBadCornerHis worst ball of the day at the worst possible time. It was no where near Squirrel.
382CompleteGoodCheck DownWell placed ball
392CompleteGoodCheck DownWell placed ball
402CompleteGoodCrossWell placed ball to allow Wright the chance to make a few people miss.
412CompleteGoodCheck DownNot that this matters given the time left on the clock… but this obviously should have been a heave to the end zone.

And TN will be in trouble because they game Nicco no real time on the field this year in games that matter. So next year if he struggles we have to listen to it's his first year starting, hasn't played much, etc. That's not how you build programs is starting over every year at the QB position in my opinion. Should not have to wait until year 3 to get production from the $8 million dollar man.

What if Arch leaves TX and goes to Bama or Florida and lights it up like the projections say he should. Let's ask Ohio St about Joe Burrows. He couldn't get on the field there. Sometimes coaches miss out on evaluations.

Didn't seem to have that trouble last year.
LOL Hyatt had blazing speed last year, Tillman was a route technician. We are missing those elements at the moment. Though i think Squirrel gets it and understands the work he has to put in.

Reports I saw were that Manning made "freshman mistakes" in practice and in their Spring game. You know, not ready.

With Burrow, he wasn't a good fit for Ohio State and wasn't even in the QB conversation his true freshman year. You know, not ready.

Arch may transfer NEXT year but this year, like most true freshmen, he's not ready. Nico, also, like most true freshmen likely isn't ready.

Agree with all the comments Nico not ready but since he will be the starter next season think it would be prudent to get some PT this season, especially if we lose to either KY or Mzou. Until this team proves they can win a road game both of these games are not guarantees.

We will play Vandy and UConn. He will get snaps in those games.

The folks saying Nico isn’t ready fail to realize he has been on campus for almost an entire year. He’s basically a RS freshman at this point.

Heup has a blind spot with Joe. It’s just that simple.
