Severe Weather Thread

i didnt realize you were in friendsville. that was the first one we got a call on. have much property damage?

We were fine. Just a lot of rain. Clouds were swirling and we got very, very nervous. My grandmother lives across the yard and has a big basement, so we chilled there for fifeteen minutes. The only damage we got was a small tree fell on our metal storage building. But that was nothing. We got lucky tonight.

you are lucky, glad for you though...one of the fortunate ones. before it all went down, someone called in and said there was a gigantic wallcloud from frogpond to 321, and it was swirling. about that time i went outside and the sky was a color i've never witnessed in real life.

The picture on the right shows something incredible, if I'm looking at it correctly. It appears to be an actual horizontal vortex that is so large and strong that it is entraining a low-hanging cloud or wall cloud. I don't know if it is still a dominant theory, but at one time (roughly 15 years ago), it was believed that these such vortexes meeting a downdraft could cause them to basically flip into a vertical vortex that would grow into a tornado in the appropriate supercell. That could be debunked by now...not sure....I don't study meteorology as much as I did then....Volcula, tiger, anyone into meteorology know?

That is exactly what it looks like. Like you said, that storms downdraft was non-existent or was not strong enough to force that rotating column of air to go vertical.

Thats my take. Awesome picture though

Hopefully you guys are good. I live right beside William Blount High School and it looked clear for everybody today.

Before the shiz hits the fan here, the clouds get bluish green and get really puffy looking, almost like the clouds are boiling upside down. Super freaky looking I know. Wish you could have gotten some pics.

Im learning I've got all kinds of neighbors on here today.

About 5:30 I thought we were goners when it went from pitch black to light in about 15 seconds.

the clouds did look upside down. i remember that...it looked like 700 colors mixed into one.

Wondering where you been all day. I knew you were into weather like me

In the lab all day (with a little VN mobile btween runs), so I wasn't even able to follow it. I checked radar around 5:30 or so, called my friend in Tuscaloosa to tell him to get below ground, then headed off to a work function. I wasn't able to follow it in detail until about 8:30 tonight....

...I hope they got some great data today, it has been a historic event and you would love for at least some good to come in the face of all the tragedy.
