Severe Weather Thread

The insurance adjuster came by, my kind of guy. He is figuring complete roof reshingle, replacing 100% of siding (he bought my pitch that it would be hard to match the remaining undamaged part), retriming all windows and doors, $2000 for tree removal, new gutters and downspouts. Plus repairing/replacing broken windows, porch furniture, weather vane, turbine roof vents. I don't know the total yet, he is going to work up all his claims Sunday and send the check Monday. Pretty darn good service, now to try to get the work done with so many others needing it too.

I am quite grateful I had no more damage than I did. Here is the home of one of my fellow church members in Bristol, TN.

Broyles, saw that on the news and in the paper. Luckily my area escaped the damage.

Looks like the bulk of the severe weather will shift into the central plains, upper midwest and the ohio valley. The jet stream is in our favor. God knows, we need the break. Hopefully the worst is over for us

I will be heading downtown (Memphis) early for the playoff game tonight so I can take some pics of the river. I will be out of town on business all next week so I won't be able to see it at full crest. There have been some amazing pictures coming from around Memphis though.

Here are a couple of pictures from Saturday afternoon. 3 more days until it crests.

The Mississippi River is now 3 miles wide at Memphis. It is normally half a mile wide.

Geez. It was previously stated that the small rivers that feed into the Mississippi could start running backwards. In west tenn that would be the Hatchie and the Wolf. Has anybody else heard that and what could that do to those rivers?

I have heard this and I emailed Dave Brown a couple of days ago and asked this:

Mr. Brown,

At what level does the Mississippi River have to get to where it will start backflowing into the feeder rivers like the Wolf and Loosahatchie? Or is it not that simple?

Thanks,
Geoff

His reply:

Hi Geoff,

It is very complicated and can’t be answered simply.

Thanks for watching us on Action News 5!

Thanks for the answer Dave.

He was as about as helpful as a butthole on your elbow. Something like that happening you be scary for SW TN though.

You gave him an out by asking, "Is it not that simple?", and he took it...:)

In the "Even though people are trying to help there will always be local inbred morons" department -

A friend of mine from church has been running supplies from Knoxville/Maryville to a very small town in northeast Alabama that had been falling though the cracks of the Red Cross and other organizations. He knew people from there through a rodeo minsitry he is a part of and we've done as much as we can.

So anyway, he makes a trip last Wednesday to deliver things to this town. The mayor of this town/county (not sure which) asks that while he is on his way back through to Maryville if he will run the items by a relief center in an even smaller community in the same county. He says sure. Mayor calls the relief center and sets it up. He goes and cannot locate the center (because it isn't marked).

I guess it is important to note here that a) my friend is from Canada, still has his accent, and uses his Canadian drivers license and b) has had to borrow a van to get there because his broke down that morning he was going. Oh yeah, and in the midst of loading/unloading stuff there dropped his phone in a puddle of water and friend it, so no cell phone service.

He pulls into a fire station he sees (logical) to ask where it was and some of the locals there start giving him the once-over. They call the cops on him. At this point think Barkey Fife except not as smart and 10,000 times more inbred. Cop comes and proceeds to continue the process of harassing him, especially why a Canadian in a van belonging to a Tennessean would be there. The cop then gives him directions to the relief center with a big grin on his face. Ends up he sends my friend stops and comes to find out he's been sent to Georgia (about 20 miles).

For some reason (he's a better person than I) he gets a couple of escorts from the city he stopped in Georgia and they accompany him back to the relief center, which by the way was a mile from the fire station where he stopped to ask for directions.

Come to find out as all of this was taking place close to sunset (meaning curfew), both my friend and his new from Georgia basically determined the cop was trying to set him up so he would be out after curfew so he would have a reason to arrest him.

Anyway, he gets back, somehow gets his phone to work, calls the mayor that originally sent him, told him what happened, apologized profusely for this, and assured him he would have a talk with the cop. Apparently when my friend started telling him the situation, the mayor didn't even have to think and knew automatically who it was.

There you have it. I wish I was making this up.

I hope that has made its way into the "punch in the face" thread

Just read an article about the 1974 Super Outbreak. I wonder how it compared to this years.
..seems it affected less populated areas.
