Shaka Smart Not Interested in TN Job And is Willing to Wait for "Perfect Job"

I agree Shaka has won me over. Watching how much he gets into the game, and never let his VCU team quit even when they were getting tired says alot to me. His team just beat a 1 seed Kansas team that averaged over 80 points a game, and got held to 61. His team was very well prepared. Its time we make a move on Shaka.

this....but also I've not seen Kansas this season in such a shooting slump like they were today.

The comparisons to Stan Heath were absolutely silly.

Smart entered this season with major question marks in the front court and the team struggled in the first half of the season.

What has happened since is a testament to his leadership skills and coaching ability.

Someone is going to get a quality coach after this tournament when they hire Smart. Can he recruit? Well, the bounce he will get after the tournament will give him and his program access to doors that were previously closed. And considering how well-spoken and charismatic he is, I wouldn't bet against him being able to recruit as well as he coaches.

per Rob Lewis. I'd say it's pretty easy to not be interested in a job when they're not interested in you.

Yes he's an awful coach, just made the final 4 after winning 5 games to get there. I don't want him, his team plays too hard and too exciting for me.

I'm starting to buy into the Shake hype.

I'm still not. I never said he is a horrible head coach, today had more to do with the players on the court than the coaching on either side. Kansas shot like garbage and a lot of it was just bad shooting, and not necessarily great defense. Just look at the free throw percentage for the game. Kansas just didn't come to play, at all.

<sarcasm> Thank god we are not getting Smart or Stevens as our next coach. We need someone like Byrd to get the ball moving. </sarcasm>

I understand that. But that was excellent defense. His offense isn't bad, but limited with against teams like Kansas of course. Did you see how VCU torched Purdue? And Painter always has good defenses. It's still a risky hire, but I'd be more okay than I was before the tournament.

Sharka vs Stevens....winner gets the UT VOLs head coaching job.

tidbit...
Butler University is one of those schools trying to balance expenses of college athletics against the benefits they bring the school.

Fong“Athletics is an important part of our institutional experience,” said Butler President Bobby Fong. “It’s a focus of student and alumni enthusiasm, and it’s an important reputational tool.”

But Fong admits Butler doesn’t have the alumni support or the money generated by large media-rights deals that bigger schools have. “That’s why we have such churn with our basketball coach position.”

Butler doesn’t divulge its coaches’ salaries, but sports business experts estimate Butler Basketball Coach Brad Stevens makes about $350,000 annually. That’s not nearly enough to compete with the university’s larger brethren.

“I do have concerns that coaches’ salaries are out of line with the general enterprise of the university,” Fong said. “This is a marketplace where we feel immense pressure that may push and pull us in directions we may not want to go in order to compete.”

Makes me think a million should interest these guys. That salary bump cannot happen, at least at Butler.

I'm still skeptical of Shaka's offense, but that's some nice defense he has those boys playing.

3 out of 5 games they shot over 46% from 3pt. Not going to happen consistently enough (especially with UT's team)

NC State is not a good job. Two schools within 30 minutes that you just can't compete with. That's gotta be rough. $.02

I agree. He could have success much quicker at Tennessee compared to NC State. There is already talent on our roster, that is saying that Hopson and Harris stay, and I would assume that Ware and Jones would be coming too if we were to hire Shaka.

its a very good job. State funding, new arena and great basketball fans...can recruit bc of the area and ACC. Also, he has 4 players on his team from NC already and his connect in Fl and VA would be a bonus in the ACC.

VCU will not win the NC. Their luck will run out against Butler. Butler can actually shoot FT's.

Hence the skepticism. 44% in the postseason and 36% in the regular season screams lucky run. But they were playing good D. Especially on FTs. :)

I agree...his team is hot, and that takes pressure off the coach. Seems like Stevens had to coach harder to get to the final 4....so, I would give the edge to him. The Butler-VCU match up will be a good one for sure.

I agree on Butler. I would pick Butler to beat VCU and UConn, to be honest. I also think they could beat UNC, but that point will be moot (IMO) as I think Kentucky will win today. I think Kentucky will be the best team going into the final four this year. It's amazing that they lost Cousins, Bledsoe, and Wall, but are better this year. Brandon Knight is so much more of a pure PG than Wall, and he has a better shot. He has been the difference between last years and this years teams. I think Kentucky is the one team that could beat Butler probably 9 times out of 10 if they played 10 in a row.

I don't think Kentucky is the best team in the Nation, its just been a crazy tourney and they have played consistent. Kentucky should win the NC.

nice info, but if he was purely motivated by money, wouldn't he have left last year when the ducks came calling with $3million ? Some people care about factors other than money.. Stevens appears to be one of those people.

Just think of how good Florida would have been this year if Knight would have stuck to his original commitment to Florida. They were already a good team, but add Knight into the mix and they would be in the final four right now.

1. State funding? Okay...great reason buddy.
2. New area? What does this even mean?

You have a pretty tenuous grasp of the English language, don't ya buddy?

NC State is not a particularly good job. They've been irrelevant for years, and they have a serious case of little brother syndrome (a) that is never going away and (b) which will always be a detriment in recruiting.
