Shaka Smart Not Interested in TN Job And is Willing to Wait for "Perfect Job"

UT is in a tough spot with some of these names bc of everything that has happen(ing)...atp its a career risk for guys like Smart,Chris Mooney and Mack. Guys like Tom Crean, Dixon and Brad Steven's seem happy with their current jobs..Grant and Cunzo Martin would be great candidates.

In general, I'm not sure and I think a lot of UT football fans were UNC basketball fans when Tennessee basketball sucked.

With me, it's because I've been a Tennessee fan for years but I go to a different school.

I'm not one of those yet, but I'm very likely to start my PhD work next fall at UNC, so I'd become one of them. But if this happens, UNC is #2 in both sports, not #2 in football and #1 in hoops.

Something still leads me to believe Smart could end up in Knoxville when its all said and done. One VCU is out of the tournament, we'll have a good understanding of what direction he's headed in.

I don't know how well Smart will do if offered the job at UT, but I do believe he has a lot of the qualities the MH seems to look for when hiring coaches. I wouldn't be the least surprised if he were not close to the head of the list.

I am not sure Shaka is the right man for the job, but I bet his definition of the "perfect job" is: one that pays $2mil. End of definition.

Shaka has the energy and enthusiasm similar to a Bruce Pearl. He is definitely a risk but it could pay huge dividends. I still think UT would be best if they bring in the Brinks truck and offer Brad Stephens whatever he wants.

I'm a Dukie.

Smart learned under some really good coaches that were winners and solid recruiters: Billy D,Oliver Purnell and Keith Dambrot. His only knock is time as a HC imo.

How bout taking V-freaking-C-U to an elite 8 in his first 2 years. Only took Bruce 6, and UT 60+ to do that.
Look at who they've played. Sure it's nice he's in the elite 8 but they haven't beaten a great team

He beat a 6 and a 3 seed, both of whom were the best possible team he could've played in those situations. Purdue was on the verge of a #1 seed and is led by a coach that many on this board have clamored for (myself NOT included). I think VCU has proved at minimum that they in fact belong in the tournament.

Still beaten the teams they had to, when it counted the most. I don't really want Shaka as our coach, but we could do much worse.

per Rob Lewis. I'd say it's pretty easy to not be interested in a job when they're not interested in you.

Ahh... The Houston Nutt strategy. Speaking of that jacka$$, I'm surprised Nutt hasn't issued a release stating he is happy coaching football in Oxfart and has no interest in the UT basketball job.

After VCU loses today... you can book it.

Like many here, I have great sources - I had a vision in a dream last night and this came to me... and there was very little alcohol involved.

You're getting a little ahead of yourself, VCU might actually pull off a win today against Kansas if they continue to play like they have in the first half. I still believe we need to give Shaka a call regardless of how this shakes out. He is beginning to prove himself at VCU. He is young, energetic, and would most likely keep our recruiting class intact. Along with keeping Harris and Hopson here at Tennessee. He is a risk, no doubt, but could certainly be worth the reward in the end.

So I'm looking at VCU shooting 44% from deep in the tournament compared to 36% in the regular season and thinking this is a ridiculous streak of hot shooting more than amazing coaching.

Could definitely be the case, but VCU looks very well prepared for this game against Kansas. Much more prepared then Mooney's Richmond team, that's jmo.

They do indeed. But it's hard to tell how much of this run is coaching and how much is getting hot from deep at the right time.
