Sticking with the east Nashville example, imagine if Vanderbilt was located on Shelby Avenue. I’m sure there would be some tensions there.

Until very recently most of the neighborhoods surrounding Vandy's campus were in significant decline but I don't recall the sort of animosity that you allude to. I think people around here generally respect the institution for its academics and appreciate the number of jobs that it creates.

Maybe it wasn't a good example. Vanderbilt people are snooty, but nowhere near like they are at Duke.

I picked up on the Durham/Duke tensions shortly after I got here, but it took me a while to figure out a lot of the details. It's been interesting to read a lot of the national press that the situation has garnered. Most of the stuff that has been written about Duke's realtionship with the Durham community I'd have to agree with. Anyway, nothing good is going to come out of this situation.

It was probably too incendiary to leave it as it was but this kind of thing just gets my goat. IMO what is happening in Durham right now is no different than the old lynch mob mentality. Being a member of a disadvantaged group does not make someone more right than other people.
I agree with you there, but if Duke had fostered better relationships with Durham in the past, we probably wouldn't be seeing the desire to lynch the accused students like we are now. My whole point is simply that both sides have contributed to the situation at hand. Hopefully, they will use this opportunity to open up some dialogue and improve the relationship.

Talk about a complete disaster!? The actions of the DA are just inexplicable.

I think the DA should be prosecuted himself for waiting so long to drop most charges and then hung if the remaining charges are dismissed..................

What about the Head Coach who actually resigned over this? Nifong has ruined lives here in the name of political pandering.

Maybe he should go to work with Karl Rove. They seem to adhere to similar gameplans.

After this first started, I said that this would probably hold up about as much as the Scottsboro case from years back. Guess it turns out I was right.

Girl wants to stay out of trouble and so she screams "rape" with an accomplice who goes along with it, but later turns and tells the truth.

Search for Scottsboro Boys or Scottsboro rape case or something if you're not sure what I'm talking about. The similarities are striking, only the race roles are reversed.

That DA is a pandering politician and a disgrace to the law. I hope that he is disbarred or at least made to resign.

resurrecting a long-dead lawgator thread should be a punishable offense

So should be complaining about relevant bumps.

Kudos to somebody for actually using the search button for once. Poor thing was collecting dust.

I qualified that by specifying that it was an LG generated thread. OE's threads, on the other hand, should receive bumps on a daily basis.

What about the constant bumping of the "LG takes his ball" thread? Surely you don't mind that?
