Should Commitments be binding?

drama is what makes recruiting fun and Dawson's Creek epic.

Because this:

is definitely epic.

nothing really wrong with what we got already. If kid wants to commit let him, we all know it don't mean sh-t, till he signs. The early signing period would kill us.Then Texas,Florida& Alabama or who ever is hot & on top at the time, would be two or three classes ahead of the schools like us. I know they couldn't sign them, but they would be working on the next years class while we're filling out the current class. Kinda like we are this class , seems we would never catch up to me.

I have to agree with LV on this topic. This is college football recruiting. It has become increasingly competitive. Recruiting services make decent amounts of money nowadays given the hype and attention that it gets. 17 year old athletes get to act like celebrities, at the moment, the world revolves around them. It can get the best of them. Moreover, it is still a life decision we are discussing here. These athletes are deciding the next four years (sometimes less) of their life. An athlete changing their mind at some point during recruitment is perfectly legitimate. We can only ask why, however, they have reasons of their own. Their goal is to get to the next level (NFL). The goal is not always the education, the program, or the tradition; for some it factors in.

The system we have now works. It is us that makes the recruiting process dramatic. We fuel the hype, and we celebritize (probably not a word, but it works) these athletes. One date for NSD is fine. LOI locks the agreement, for it is a contract binding the player to a program. We should all know by now that verbal commitments mean next to nothing in the big picture. I thought we all would know this by now and I question the point of this thread.

In the end all the rules should work for the student athlete. If an early signing period was instituted (I'd be fine with that) then there should be special rules in place to protect their best interests.

Hypothetically, what if Tyler Bray signed with UT last September, and Paul Johnson was brought in to coach the Vols? In that case, Tyler should absolutely get an unconditional release from Tennessee, and be eligible to play in the fall.

The NCAA rules are already unreasonable, and they are applied inconsistently across the country. Why make more rules placing more restrictions on the choices students make?

Why even have commitments then?? I don't understand the premise of allowing that to happen, while allowing them to actively be recruited by another school and having to babysit them constantly.

Commitments fuel Rivals and Scout and ESPN recruiting.

This is why I don't put a lot of stock into recruiting until after the season.

but there are a lot of people who do put stock into a commit and then bash their coach if he doesnt get a lot of early ones...even though they mean "squat"

Agreed.

The NCAA already has problems instituting the rules put in place. Adding more would really make it a hassle.

As much as players get screwed with how they let coaches jump from job to job, I say let them have their fun and jump from school to school if they want too. After all, a verbal commitment is simply letting everyone know who their favorite school is. IMO they are free game until they sign on the dotted line!

No no, you can decommit, but you would have to do so before having contact with another staff. You can't commit and still talk to other schools.

Interesting, just don't believe it could be enforced. Talking would be hard to enforce, but you could eliminate official visits to other schools while commited.

After reading my post again, I probably overstepped when I said "all the rules". Considering the fact that a scholarship is nothing more than a one year offer, these kids need protection. When you factor in how long it takes the NCAA to pass judgement on appeals, it seems crazy to offer anymore restrictions.

There needs to be two signing periods. Like a 1 week signing period in the fall. Then the normal signing period in Feb.

No commitments until NSD. That way no fans will get their feelings hurt and kids can make all their visits and take their time to make an informed decision.

This is essentially what is in play now. The commitments are simply blown up by fans/media. The truth is they mean less and less each year.

They are 17 and 18 year old kids when they make these decisions. Things change in the process too. If they were locked into verbals we would not have Da'Rick Rogers right now.

I would like to see a process where kids who are in their senior year can commit to a school at any point and submit their LOI making it official right then and there.

And then the HC gets fired, or the position coach that was recruiting him takes another job.

What happens then?

I think they should be let out if either the head coach or their position coach leaves. In all honesty, I'd be okay with backing out of the LOI if any change with the coaching staff occurs.

That being said, I'm okay with the commitment/signing process as it is now, but I think that players that sign/enroll early should be allowed to change their minds if there are staff changes.

...but the rules must be specific and firmly established, so it isn't up to the Gestapo to rule on a case by case basis.

that makes sense.....interesting how college football is becoming more for the coaches(big $) and being a farm teams for nfl and less about the athelete, students, and fans...

Early enrollees are a different case. Is it okay for a kid to quit in the middle of the first week and go elsewhere?

That's interfering with academics then, which is supposed to be the point.

Exactly. Right now, the NCAA does whatever the hell it wants.

...and will continue to do so. I just wonder if this thread was started to neutralize or negate the effectiveness of our rivals recruiting and our lack of "commitments" at this time.
