SIAP John Crompton tells Bama fans...

I see why he has his opinion, but to say things like that is basically telling any future QB prospects to play for Bama IMO. That's why I have a problem with this.

Are you really shocked that he might attempt to steer guys away from a school whose fans sent him death threats because he wasn't playing a game up to their standards and encourage them to play for the guy who played a huge role in turning his college career around? And to be honest, it doesn't even really sound like he's trying to steer them away from UT, just giving credit to Kiffin for what he did for him personally.

I never bashed him while playing. Yes, he gave what he had for UT, but with statements like he made in this case, he is doing nothing but trying to tear down UT. Any true Vol fan would have a problem with this.

ah the true fan card. Nice

can you admit Kiffin helped Crompton become a serviceable QB for the first time in his UT career?

he said nothing about UT and was simply talking about his former coach. Seems your issue should be with Kiffin and not Crompton

Peyton goes to work with Cutcliffe in the offseason and gives him credit for his success. He openly supports Cutcliffe as a great QB coach. Should he stop doing that?

Don't understand hatin' on a HOF coach who won a NC and is one of Tennessee's winningest coaches. He kinda let things slip, but that's no reason to go hatin' on the man. :two cents:

Yep...me either.

I'm sure he gets the "hate" from his coaching career but also being a former player I thought he fit the op's question.

Obviously. Any true Vol fan would have a major problem with a former player giving ANY credit to ANY coach not currently on the staff.

It's one thing to say a coach helped you become a better player, it's another thing to say if you're gonna play in the SEC, you might as well play for the best. I guess that's the part that bothers me. I have no problem with saying a coach helped you, but don't send a message to recruits to go play for a rival.

What exactly did he say that "tears UT down"?

Maybe some members of our fanbase can keep this in mind the next time they sit down to send a death threat to an unpaid college athlete who isn't meeting their expectations.

I agree 100%. But every player knows that every fan base has fans that do that. It doesn't mean that he should be saying what he said though.

now if he gave an honest assessment on the last time he faced a Jancek/Martinez defense that would probably be considered bashing

Disagree completely. He doesn't owe UT a thing, especially after the way he was treated by our fanbase.

I'm just going to try and keep that thought out of my mind when Bama comes to town this fall. That '09 UGA game was a full on beatdown.

A 4 yr scholly for playing a sport he loves, a free education, and a pathway to his future. He owes UT nothing??

Exactly. Even if you're going to make the argument that all of that is equal compensation for four (actually five) years of his services on the football team, then at the very least he left campus on even terms with UT. He owes them nothing.

I wish Kiffin were still the coach at Tennessee. He coached us through the best season we've had in 6 years and was a FG away from beating Bama... that might have been the biggest upset in Tennessee football history. I think he's a good coach.

Glad we have Butch though.

Wow. I don't even know how to respond to this.

Cromp never was the sharpest knife in the drawer. All his problems were mental not talent based. But if he thinks Kiffy had something to do with him coming out of his slump that's his right. Going so far as to say Kiffy has players' backs is absurd based on what we know of him but he has a right to his opinion, misguided though it may be.
