Who ever said this defense should look like Bama's d with less athletes?
Posted via VolNation Mobile

Using them as an example in regards to talent, speed and angles. Some say technique and angles matter more than speed. I say we can have better technique and better angles, but without talent and speed, we will still get run over and around.
I wish we would head upfield and disrupt, personally. Building a wall as bama does by standing up OL and letting great lbs and safeties make plays doesn't bode well for our skill level and isn't working.

If they are faster they can beat you to the corner, only the posters on Volnation cannot see that.

Watching FSU and Bama is exciting because Jones is recruiting those types of athletes. There is no other way, if you wanna compete in the top 5 you have to recruit in the top 5.

Go CBJ and Go Vols

Maybe we should recruit the fastest sprinters and not worry about football ability. That way we can stop defenses, at least that's what you think.

On that we agree.
We need better athletes that's not opinion but fact. I just hope the coaches on that side are able to maximize better talent when they get it. This group has a lower ceiling but we haven't maximized it either so far.

Agree 100%.

One more point is like to make is that we practice tackling angles against our rbs that don't have edge or breakaway speed. When we get into games against teams like oregon, mizzou and auburn, they have qb and rb game speed that we don't ever practice against.

You could have an entire defense of 4.3 guys, and if they played with the same sort of discipline and technique that UT played with yesterday, the only difference would be that you would see the defenders running guys down from behind after 15 and 20 yard gains.

Anyone who sees Auburn's ability to beat us on the edges yesterday as simply and only a matter of speed doesn't have a lot of applicable experience with the game of football.

You were watching a different game than was I. Our edge contain man was stepping inside almost every play.

It went both ways. That's the purpose of the fake. The damn offense is designed to confuse and place the de/olb out of position.

They were successful.

Once faster players are at UT, it won't matter if they are out of position, take bad angles, bite on fakes, and don't tackle.

More speed plus the best coaching staff in America equals championships!

Didn't Jancek coach at Georgia with elite talent and elite speed?

I even think Richt fired him because he couldn't cut it

I thought they won 2 sec championships? Could be wrong.

Jancek was co- defensive coordinator at Georgia on 2009, along with Martinez

Prior to that, he was Lbs coach from 2005-2008

He wasn't promoted to DC at Cincy under Butch until 2012

Prior to Georgia, his last time as DC was at Grand Valley State in 2002

So we have a DC that has a combined 2 years at the position in D1

Do people blaming poor angles not understand that slower defenders will have poor angles against faster ballcarriers? Doesn't matter what angle you take when the other guy is faster. I suppose you could just run backward and to the sideline. Maybe try to make a tackle at midfield by just running to the spot right at the start. Rb takes a handoff at the 20 and beats the edge, lets just have the lb run backwards 30 yards and maybe his slow ass will have a good angle then.
You really don't know what your talking about do you? There is this thing called football speed and yes it can be coached. Google it. Just google "football speed". I'm not gonna try and explain to you what it actually means because I don't have all day.

For an example of how to negate speed look no further than the Stanford defense. The much slower Stanford defense completely negated Orgeons speed just the other night. How did they do it? A great scheme, discipline and sound technique. Why? Because they are well coached.

A large part of the issue yesterday was the play of the defensive line. You have to get quick pressure up the middle to blow some of that stuff upÂ….and we got none. We beat South Carolina with pushing the interior into the backfield.

For the life of me, I still can't figure out how Brewer and Sapp got caught up in the middle of the field when they should have been running straight to the sideline.

I'm on record saying that we definitely need talent. There was a post on here a few days ago from someone that had spoken to an SEC ref who said we were the slowest D in the SEC this year. I can't vouch for the veracity, but it is believable. The talent gap is a bigger issue than coaching, but the persistence with the nickel was really frustrating. That in combined with the lack of any interior push was a recipe for disaster yesterday.

Yet you are saying the same thing I have been saying. People list 40 times to say we have speed. I have said multiple times that 40 times mean nothing on the field as far as lbs and dline. Instinct, acceleration, technique, angle, and speed, specifically shuttle or short burst speed, are the assets that go into a player having football speed. If you still want to argue that our dl and lbs have those assets, then its obvious who doesn't know wtf they are watching.
By the way, Stanford has had a dozen draft picks the last 4 years. How many have we had? Still want to argue they we have had the same football team speed as teams with 2x as many draft picks? Again, feel free. I'm sure a top 5 team that just beat Oregon doesn't have more team speed than a team that just gave up 400 yards rushing.

Janacek and Martinez both have long histories of getting torched. This is simply not the time to be calling for heads, but people need to be aware that their track records are less than stellar.

Seems like we have gone from penetrating dl to holding up blocks and trying to form a wall. Not a good idea, imo, with our skill level. Butch mentioned our guys got on their heels yesterday and he didn't know why. He better correct it. If you are going to stand up blocks, read, then react too late as they fly by, change it up, shoot the gaps, and go down swinging.
It did appear we tried to adjust and spy, but you can't spy with a much slower player and we got burned when we did by a simple shoulder fake, then burst. Bring in a quick nickel back or safety.

Silly is this football or track? Sure speed helps but technique, positioning, experience, scheme, game planning, coaching, player preparation, play calling are all more important. Who do you think has the faster team speed Oregon or Stanford?

Are team matches up better to a Stanford than it does to a oregon

That only works if you are holding blocks, and they weren't doing that yesterday. Everybody was getting mauled.

If that was indeed the approach, I agree that it was flawed.

Justin Wilcox turned Nick Reviez into a credible SEC LB.

This lack of speed argument has some merit but doesn't explain away the sh-t show we have seen this season on defense.

And it's not just the last 3 weeks. WKY and S Alabama put nearly 400 yards each on this defense.

I think Nick turned himself into an All-SEC performer and a real leader on the team.

However, Wilcox definitely did more with less. Last two weeks would have been different with a Wilcox level DC.

I'm glad someone said this.

Getting beat two weeks in a row with four running plays is not just a question of lack of talent / speed. Several teams with less speed than us have had more success.

444!

Ky used 3 plays and a wr at qb when they beat us and ran up and down the field. We couldn't get off the field on d. Wilcox did scheme well at times but mostly played soft d to protect our lack of talent. Not sure how he would do against 3 top 10 teams with true skill at qb and rb if we can't get a ky offense off the field on 3rd down.

Didn't KY have half their yards in the first drive of the game?

Defense WAS NOT the reason we lost in Lexington. A guy in orange pants that you defended well into the next season was.

Here's the thing. Very few high school football players actually possess football speed. Nautral god given speed, yes. Your right in that its not straight line speed, its how quick a player can get to or accelerate to their top end. Its taught through drills and technique. It does not come from natural talent. Speed is part of every strength and conditioning program in America.

Take Oregon for example. Every player recruited to Oregon has to go through their "speed school".

Football speed is coached through drills and technique. But you can only do so much. That's why scheme, technique and discipline mean so much, and that can only be a product of the coach.

We don't have slow players, we have under developed players that for some reason use bad technique and have no discipline. In my view and mine alone that can only be a result from coaching. They can't be developed over night, but they sure as heck can be taught the correct technique and to have discipline.

I know offense was a big part of that problem. Was pointing out that Wilcox didn't stop ky that day. Go look at the time of possession.
Now, that you say I defended Dooley anytime past the Florida 3rd quarter debacle is a flat out lie. Not surprised though. Vn is full of them.
