Smokey Grays Saturday [Tennessee rolling out alternate uni's Saturday]

The Smokey Grays can be pretty divisive.
I like them and they are truer to the earluer UT uniforms
The 1892 version looks like a baseball uniform

The first football uniforms (1892) were put together by the individual players, with many variations, but generally consisted of a black pullover jersey with a sleeveless, buttoned overvest upon which were a “U” and a “T” to the right and left of the opening. In 1902 the overvest was discontinued. Pants were gray. In 1920 players sewed padding into their pants and wore elbow pads. In 1921 the team wore black jerseys with white numbers.

Orange (wool) jerseys, with black numbers on the back, were first worn on September 23, 1922 (Tennessee 50, Emory & Henry 0). In 1935 the jerseys were white with orange stripes on the sleeves, but with General Neyland’s return in 1936, the orange jerseys also returned and included white numbers on the front, for the first time, as well as on the back. In 1963 the team wore orange jerseys with black numerals and black piping. The 1963 helmets had black numerals, replacing the orange numbers of the previous year.

Not sure if this has been mentioned, but if you are gonna have a design in honor of the the artful dodger, shouldn’t you use his #7 instead of #1 when selling it?

I do like the orange shoulder better on the smokey grey, compared to white.

Holloway could be honored before, during, or after every game and it would be cool. He was before my time, but my uncle had a VHS tape about him, so he was a big deal to me.

The Smokey greys with the silhouette of the mountains on the helmet were the best alternative uniforms by far.

True.
The kids like them.
The only thing I don't want to see is the orange helmet.
Not because of the USCjr game, but because they made us look like any of ten other teams. I didn't realize how important the iconic helmet was until I saw the team playing on the field.
The black and grey helmets are fine. The Orange Power T has to stay.

My first impression was I did not like the orange on the shoulder pads until I realized they are to honor "The Artful Dodger". I was in school at UT and was at the game when Condredge started. The man is greatness and emboldens what makes someone a VFL!!. I am happy they are wearing these on Saturday.
Holloway never wore a gray jersey. How is this honoring him?

Those helmets rock. Have the mountains been dropped? Smokey grey on OR is my fav uni. Excited to have the OR helmet back again this year.

Simply amazing! I love the Smokey Grey!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! Anytime we can honor our Legends it is a good day! Maybe we can honor Peyton with away white unis with big numbers outlined in black!

I really like the fact that we only use alternates in non rivalry games. Keeps the temptation down to get humiliated like UGA did vs Bama in that blackout game. Plus, it preserves the classic rivalry look.

For me, any alternate is okay as long as it is orange and white based. Just not a fan of the grey or black unis, and definitely not of any helmet other than the white w/ orange T.

I put Tennessee in the same category as Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan as far as being storied and traditional NCAA powers, and those schools never f***k with their traditional colors or uniform style. Just old school, I guess.
I don’t want our beloved school being compared with those garbage institutions! We’re better than them & if our AD & coaches want to allow the players to decide on alternates and the players want to wear them, I will support them.
