Smokey Grays Saturday [Tennessee rolling out alternate uni's Saturday]

Uh, are you at all aware of Condredge Holloway's legacy in the SEC and at UT?

I was on campus in '71 and he faced a lot of crap, not for how he played, for simply being of a different race. It's an issue that's entwined in his career at UT.

Uh, I'm completely aware, thank you, and certainly don't need a lecture from you, although you guys live to lecture. The race issue is shoved down our throats 24-7-365, and now even in threads about uniforms, of all things.

I am thrilled that the legacy of one of the all-time VFL's is being honored. I don't like the uniforms.

It's to honor the Artful Dodger. You think that that is nonsense? Troll.

Way to completely twist what I said. I'm thrilled we're honoring the legacy of an all-time VFL.

I don't like the uniforms. Why not go with the unis he actually wore? No nonsense, and they're orange and white. You know ..... the school colors?

All the matters is if the players like the uniforms, and the recruits for that matter. None of what we think should go into it. If it helps our players and program I’m all for it.

Also they’re probably my favorite Smokey grey uniforms yet. The black ones are my all time favorite though.

I don't lecture anymore, thanks. If you're aware then you should realize there's absolutely no way to separate Holloway's legacy from the racial issues of that time.

Race is shoved into things way too often but pick your battles. Unfortunately, racial issues and Condredge Holloway's time at UT isn't a battle you're going to win.

I'm not a huge fan of the unis but the kids like them. I don't like the music they play in practice either. I don't like purple hair. I don't like pierced ears on men (though mine was in 1971) and a lot of that happens.

I'm just not touchy, usually, about it like you.

They are doing that style to honor Condredge Holloway, according Huep

I love them
I know, and think that’s cool, just hope the design stays in the past, it’s like a completely different kind of jersey as if for a different team.

To each their own.lol

This is a forum where we express and exchange opinions, not make or affect policy. Nothing we say here is going into anything.

That is simply my opinion, regardless what the players and recruits like.

Yes that’s true… I’m simply stating my opinion too.

I get what you're saying, and I'm not minimizing a single thing about Conredge's legacy. You and I probably are like thinking on most things.

But I was simply commenting on the grey uniforms, which have nothing to do with CH or what the players or recruits like or dislike, and you launched into the lecture on his legacy. Wouldn't it be more special if UT wore the actual uniforms from Holloway's time to honor him, like the ones worn as an alternate in 2004?

I'm sorry I even brought it up, I just never imagined a comment on a uniform choice would turn into this. Enjoy your Labor Day.

I can admit it.... I love alternate uniforms. Loooooove them.

I hate this design. I hated when we wore them with the orange and white scheme years ago.

I just hate it.

But I'd rather them wear a design I hate than to have no alternate art all.

Agreed, man. We'd likely agree a lot about how race is used. This time it is essential to the story.

Condredge is around the program, around the building often I think, and they probably at least asked him about this Saturday and what he thought.

I bet he said "Wear the uniforms the kids like" if they asked his opinion. I imagine he appreciates the deserved triangle nod to that '71 uniform but I'm not a fan.

I like the Smokeys as a once in a while thing. I even liked the Blackout unis as a change up. I'm old. I'm partial to Orange britches and white jerseys with real grass stains at the end of the game but let the kids have fun. Just win.

For me, any alternate is okay as long as it is orange and white based. Just not a fan of the grey or black unis, and definitely not of any helmet other than the white w/ orange T.

I put Tennessee in the same category as Alabama, Penn State, and Michigan as far as being storied and traditional NCAA powers, and those schools never f***k with their traditional colors or uniform style. Just old school, I guess.

I /love/ the smoky grays--but these "artful dodger" grays are super ugly, IMO. Just because we had an ugly uni in the 70s, doesn't mean
we have to repeat the mistake to honor Holloway. I doubt having a uniform design similar to what he wore decades ago wasn't high on his "hope for"
list on Saturday.

I don't like the Orange on the shoulders. Make the Jersey all black or gray except the number and it would be fine IMO
Also looks worse with the white outline

Why put a white outline when nothing else has a white outline? Doesn't match really. Meh.

Glad we will only see it once.

It's a tribute uniform. Condredge Holloway was a tremendous quarterback at Tennessee, no problem what so ever with paying him tribute with the uniform.
Agree. Never been known for my fashion expertise so I'll leave that part of the discussion to all of you who are fasionistas. I do like it is a tribute uniform and certainly there couldn't be a finer person to start with than Condredge Holloway. We were in school at the same time and he has been a favorite quarterback (and baseball player) of mine for over 50 years.

Just hope the 5:00 ET start for this game means clouds and a shaded field. Baseball Vols learned about wearing black uniforms on hot summer days. Has anyone in the athletic department worked with folks in the engineering department regarding the science of being able to pick out dark vs bright colored helmets and jerseys when running down a football field? I am good with whatever color jersey the players agree on but, would like to provide them with the best information regarding the color they pick and the best color to win in. I am a grad of the UT engineering department and the color of a uniform can give you the edge or the opponent the edge. That would be following science.
