A quick question, do you guys think the 9 game season is helping or hurting the Big 10? I would argue it is hurting them and there is greater reward in scheduling a cupcake. Ever since Delany, much to the chagrin of the Big 10 coaches, implemented the 9 conference game season the Big 10 champs have missed the playoffs.
Of course, the SEC is the only conference with fans loyal enough to show up when their teams play the School for the Deaf and Blind so there is no risk there.
committee got it wrong.
IMHO it validates going to an 8 team playoff.
Unfortunately with the politics of the game, UCF may not of gotten in even then.....
You're probably right... People just like the idea of an upstart G5 team.
Problem is that any G5 school that is good enough to make the playoff will have a coach that will bolt for a bigger job. That will result in a playoff team having an interim coach and getting blownout by the 1 seed. Anyone who thinks an 8 team playoff is remotely a smart idea is wrong.
I think this would work best. The conference championship has to mean something.
Chiming in late here, but I'm onboard with this...
8 team playoff.
Regular season reduced to 11 games for all FBS teams.
Conference championship games stay.
P5 conference champs are in.
Top 2 (as ranked) G5 teams are in.
Highest rated non-conference champ FBS team is in.
Teams seeded by the Playoff Committee, then it's a single-elimination tournament.
So...11 game RS, conference championship, plus max of 3 playoff games = 15 game season. We're already there, so not adding another game.
Top 2 G5 schools get in. 6 spots for P5, 2 spots for G5. More than fair.
Let the little guys have a chance.
Go Vols.
If I did this right, here's how the 8-team format I laid out would have worked:
#8 Memphis -vs- #1 Clemson
#7 UCF -vs- #2 Oklahoma
#6 Wisconsin -vs- #3 Georgia
#5 Ohio State -vs- #4 Alabama
Couple of interesting matchups there.

Im all for an 8 team playoff.
5 conference champs
2 at large
1 highest rated G5 school
1st round the higher seed hosts at home, semifinals and final is at a neutral location like it is now.
