So the committee is officially a joke

A quick question, do you guys think the 9 game season is helping or hurting the Big 10? I would argue it is hurting them and there is greater reward in scheduling a cupcake. Ever since Delany, much to the chagrin of the Big 10 coaches, implemented the 9 conference game season the Big 10 champs have missed the playoffs.

Of course, the SEC is the only conference with fans loyal enough to show up when their teams play the School for the Deaf and Blind so there is no risk there.

The B1G also mandated not scheduling future FCS teams. Big Boy Football.

committee got it wrong.

IMHO it validates going to an 8 team playoff.

Unfortunately with the politics of the game, UCF may not of gotten in even then.....

I’m all for an 8 team playoff.

5 conference champs
2 at large
1 highest rated G5 school

1st round the higher seed hosts at home, semifinals and final is at a neutral location like it is now.

If we do go to an 8 team playoff this is exactly how I want it done.

6 team playoff would be the best step imo. #1 #2 get a first round bye while #3-#6 play eachother. That would give a non p5 a tiny chance to make it in with a miracle year like ucf had. This year an 8 team play off may have just muddied the water even further.

UCF is not one of the best 8 teams in the country.

I am more than OK with ANY system that will force the Mighty Notre Dammmmers into a Conference!! :)

Kind of impressed with what Frost accomplished with those kids at UCF but their lack of an out of conference schedule worth even mentioning is what kept them out of the conversation. Many of us knew AU and the GusBus wouldn't get up for that game so we were picking UCF to win it. Let them play a game like that during their regular season though and then they will get more talk about being in the CFP.

I think this would work best. The conference championship has to mean something.

You're probably right... People just like the idea of an upstart G5 team.

Problem is that any G5 school that is good enough to make the playoff will have a coach that will bolt for a bigger job. That will result in a playoff team having an interim coach and getting blownout by the 1 seed. Anyone who thinks an 8 team playoff is remotely a smart idea is wrong.

Don’t agree with this at all

Chiming in late here, but I'm onboard with this...

8 team playoff.
Regular season reduced to 11 games for all FBS teams.
Conference championship games stay.
P5 conference champs are in.
Top 2 (as ranked) G5 teams are in.
Highest rated non-conference champ FBS team is in.

Teams seeded by the Playoff Committee, then it's a single-elimination tournament.

So...11 game RS, conference championship, plus max of 3 playoff games = 15 game season. We're already there, so not adding another game.

Top 2 G5 schools get in. 6 spots for P5, 2 spots for G5. More than fair.

Let the little guys have a chance.

Go Vols.

If I did this right, here's how the 8-team format I laid out would have worked:

#8 Memphis -vs- #1 Clemson
#7 UCF -vs- #2 Oklahoma
#6 Wisconsin -vs- #3 Georgia
#5 Ohio State -vs- #4 Alabama

Couple of interesting matchups there.

Pretty sure your format would leave out Wisconsin and put in USC.

Also, it is absurd to give as many at-large spots to the Group of 5 as to the Power 5.

No way the G5 should get 2 spots in an 8 team playoff.

And teams aren't going to give up a 12th regular season game, too much money made on the home game for the big schools.

Seeds 1-4 would win in blowouts.

8 Team playoff is the worst idea possible.

Yeah, I get all that. Just offering an alternate viewpoint on the whole playoff thing. I get the complaints of the G5 schools, but they play "G5 schedules", so how do you compare a 9-3 Auburn team to a 12-0 UCF? The better argument is the P5 schools that get left out, but the only way to cover that is to go to 8 teams...which I think we will at some point. Think about it: every other level has a playoff, and it works. At the FBS level it's all about the money / bowls. That...and only that...is the real reason we still don't have a bona-fide playoff for the FBS national championship.

So the best "middle ground" is to reduce the regular season to 11 games; allow the conference championship games; the P5 conference champs are automatic qualifiers; then you take one or two (personally, I don't care) G5 teams, and fill the bracket with the highest ranked remaining teams. This year, using the final season rankings from the Playoff Committee, you would have gotten what I listed above. And yes, you likely would have gotten a couple of blowouts, but the 3-6 seed games look pretty good to me.

Only way to appease...and silence...the G5 crowd is to let 'em in, and then show them why they don't belong there. So long as disinterested 9-3 teams like Auburn don't show up for their bowl game, the G5 argument just gets stronger, and louder.

This thread, unlike many here, actually invites intelligent discourse. I'm interested in seeing who all has ideas on how to make the system better.

Go Vols.

An 8 team playoff increases the chances of two SEC teams playing each other in the final game. The SEC will still dominate and people will still complain.
