So what happened to Dools?

Dooley was the lowest point of the decade and a half I really wish we'd all stop discussing, including myself.

I felt like Kiffin might have a chance to be the real thing, but he was clearly not ready for the big stage at that point, Jones recruited well and we had some great talent to watch, but he was in way over his head in the SEC, and Pruitt offered hope because he wasn't Schiano and his pedigree, but was an incompetent clown.

But Dooley was a panic hire right off the bat, and before he ever coached a game I can recall only wondering how many seasons we would have to endure before he was finally gone.
Exactly. There was at least a chance the others might succeed. Dooley was just awful. And lazy.

I don’t agree. He wasn’t lazy. He did however rub a lot of people the wrong way. He was the opposite of lazy though I can promise you that. He was a micromanager on just about any and all parts of the program instead of focusing on the roles he needed to.

Friend of mine was a recruiting analyst for Scout at the time. Dooley rarely went to watch prospects in person. Sent assistants to do it.

My friend asked Darrin Hinshaw, then the recruiting coordinator, about Jalen Hurd heading into Hurd’s junior year. Hinshaw had no idea who he was. And he was the RECRUITING COORDINATOR. 5* RB in the center of the state and he wasn’t in their radar.

Yeah, Dooley mailed it in. There’s a reason Butch and Pruitt both recruited much better than Dooley…because they worked harder.

Hmm… think charitably… good things Dools did during his brief tenure… He provided a lot of input into the design and construction of the indoor practice facility.

Dooley is a good offensive minded coach. Good position coach. Good person (from what I know and my interactions with him).

He just didn’t have what it takes to be a head coach. Butch Jones is the much bigger tool than Dooley IMO.

Never had any ill will toward Dooley, he was just in over his head. Most integrity out of the coaches in the gulf between Fulmer and Heupel for sure. Hope he’s doing well in life.
Good guy, horrible coach. I still can't wrap my head around he was coming off a 4-8 record, and had a losing record in the Sun Belt. And was hired. At UT. He. Was. Hired. By. UT. Just blows my mind.

Hamilton put our program in the ditch with that hire, and it has taken us this long to (mostly) get out.

Actually kinda the opposite. He wanted out after his second year but wanted all his buyout money also. Hart told him no way so he “coached” another year to get fired.
Looking back, we should have ponied up.

I have always thought this picture perfectly encapsulates Derek Dooley and his time here and how we were able to move past the damage he caused. While we’re celebrating like it’s 1999 after beating Bama, Derek is eating some sketti and meatballs. View attachment 668281
Appropriately next to what appears to be a trash receptacle. 🤣

Yeah, phenomenally bad hire. It is difficult to grasp the ineptitude of the UTAD at that time.

I have to take issue with the bold part. He was the laziest recruiter in UT history.

Maybe that’s what Dooley was used to, coming from Georgia. Seems like recruiting takes less effort when you have a talent rich state all to yourself.

TN coaches can’t just drive around Atlanta like a two bit contractor looking for migrant workers at Home Depot.

That’s not what anyone does. You think Kirby Smart does that? Just because talent is in your state doesn’t mean they’re going to your school. Schools all over the country are diving hard into Georgia, including Tennessee, Auburn, Alabama, Clemson, Florida State, Ohio State, etc. If you’re gonna recruit in the SEC, you’d better WORK.

Oh, and there’s also the fact that Derek Dooley didn’t recruit for Georgia a day in his life. 🙄

How can he be a QB for his dad At Georgia and not know where recruits come from? I felt some guilt in you taking my lighthearted post so literal, but then you one upped me on the goofiness. Do you know who Vince Dooley is?

Who else was on Hamilton's radar during the Dooley coaching search?

I remember Muschamp turning him down cold. He was still coach in waiting at Texas at the time I think.

I would assume Mike Gundy. Dude should very well set up a scholarship fund at UT for all the money we have made him.

I seem to recall Cut being interested but wanted to bring his coaching staff and Hamilton said no. Something weird like that anyway.

I am sure there were others but the timeline there was so condensed who knows?

I know when Hamilton hired Kiff the year before, Gary Patterson really wanted the job here.

Patterson would have been a much better hire in the long run.
