Now she has a real incentive to succeed. trolling John Adams. I have never been more all in for a coach in my life. That was my favorite part.
John Adams sounds just as toadish in person as his snarky attempts at writing.
I loved it when she put him in his place, but she's made a media enemy for life. He thinks he's the smartest person in every room and won't stand for being slighted. Kim should watch her back around him.
They also stopped the press conference there. That style has not been a winning formula in the SEC, i.e., Coach Flo, Johnnie Harris and even Coach yo when she tries going all out with that press. Top tier teams gonna beat a press all day long.“Kim, do you think your style of play will work at this level or do you think you might have to alter it somewhat?” (paraphrase)
Kim: “ I wouldn’t be here if I didn’t think we could be successful with our style” (paraphrase) (stated with a steely eyed and blunt answer)
She has some grit, and some conviction. Good sign.
She mentioned he gave up his career so I wonder if that means he won’t be coaching. Although, D’Antoni was fired at Marshall so I want sure Caldwell was still on staff there. Maybe she meant giving up his head coaching job to go to Marshall .If Kim's husband is valuable enough to be an assistant on the Marshall men's team and can be an asset to both Kim and the players at UT, them go for it. My only reservation would be the question of how well they work together and if the family dynamics allow them to accept the power structure. Easier when the spouses are co-hc, but that isn't a likely scenario at this time.
Maybe they plan to start a family soon and he's okay being Domestic Dad. Or maybe there's an available coaching job close to Knoxville.
This official introduction will be forgotten very fast. No one will be talking about it once her first portal signings are announced and the requisite evals start flooding in. But it is a fun in-the-moment thing to over react to.Pressers mean nothing to me. Winning a presser even less. I remember Jones presser and that he was a doofus. Dooleys black suit and orange tie and thinking the guy looked greasy. Nothing about her appearance stuck out and imprinted any type of first impression. I remember watching JP walk out and being grateful his head was not more pointed.
I did enjoy her exchange with Adams
I would argue these are not the same. Esp with regard to volume at the 3.They also stopped the press conference there. That style has not been a winning formula in the SEC, i.e., Coach Flo, Johnnie Harris and even Coach yo when she tries going all out with that press. Top tier teams gonna beat a press all day long.
And how far did those teams get? Did they even win their conferences this year? Mcguff has plenty of WNBA talent and didn't win the Big 10 or go far in the Tournament this year? Ohio state lost in the second round of the NCAA tournament to duke with that press.OSU does fine so does WV look at that Iowa game
Her style of play sounds like that of Terri Williams-Flornoy of Auburn who was fired. They had a great press, pressed for 40 minutes, and played a lot of players, but as good as that press was in the SEC great athletes can beat great presses which caused Coach Flo to get fired. That style of play failed badly in the SEC and I am not sure Danny Williams knows what SEC women's basketball is really like. Hell, Matthew Mitchell had what was called 40 Minutes of Dread and had to modify that to compete in the SEC consistently. Two highly experienced Power 5 D-1 coaches with the same philosophy Caldwell is bringing which led to modification my Mitchell to be able to compete and stay relevant in the SEC and coach Flo did not modify and ended up losing a lot of games and was fired. That statement, "I do think it will translate, or I wouldn't be here" comes from inexperience at this level (notice how quickly they stopped the press conference when asked if she may have to modify in the SEC to compete). I don't think she knows what she is in for in the SEC. We've seen this style plenty and it doesn't hold up and/or translate to the SEC because of the overall size, skill, and athleticism of SEC women's basketball players in this league. Sure hope we can get the top-tier recruits that want to play 12-15 minutes per game. I just don't know if they are out there. Today's generation might get over that in a big hurry.
If she can get a bunch of 5 Star Athletes that are as big and strong as those at South Carolina, LSU and Ole miss over the next 4-5 years, maybe. You have to have the athletes to really press well and then they have to be able to score. Virginia Tech showed what can be done to a 40-minute pressing team when they played Marshal as did Duke when they played OSU.I would argue these are not the same. Esp with regard to volume at the 3.
Look at Alabama men’s… same system.
They dominate the SEC.
Well why not. U have to envision it ig. I see us struggling early and coming in hot into March. Love we have a coach who has cut down National Nets (respect D2)Well Danny sure didn’t help her any by saying in the introduction press conference that Kellie Harper was good but not great and that the expectation is great… AND that he and players wanted to win next year. In trying to hype her up, he inadvertently set the bar incredibly high (quickly).
Yeah and I’m sure she’s very aware of that.If she can get a bunch of 5 Star Athletes that are as big and strong as those at South Carolina, LSU and Ole miss over the next 4-5 years, maybe. You have to have the athletes to really press well and then they have to be able to score. Virginia Tech showed what can be done to a 40-minute pressing team when they played Marshal as did Duke when they played OSU.
Correct. If she doesn't win 20+ games and get to at least the Sweet 16 next year, this hire is a complete fail.Well Danny sure didn’t help her any by saying in the introduction press conference that Kellie Harper was good but not great and that the expectation is great… AND that he and players wanted to win next year. In trying to hype her up, he inadvertently set the bar incredibly high (quickly).
One of the strangest press conferences I have saw. Just a handful of questions. 1 mic drop. Then a bunch of people running around, getting the podium off stage as fast as possible, 3-4 pics in less than 30 seconds - bada boom bada bing and its over!
I thought I was at the local community theatre between acts trying to change the props. Not one thank you for coming, not a we will take 3 more questions, no talking to D White for a follow up, no talking to any current lady vols.
