So with Saban off the table, where does Texas look now?

They would be stupid to fire CMB without a proven winning coach waiting on the job we know better than most that's how to destroy a program.

Without an assistant coach in waiting there is never a guaranteed coach waiting in the wings. Respected and currently employeed coaches (like Saban) don't pursue jobs that aren't open.

If you want to go the Bobby Petrino route then maybe.

Texas will force a lot of schools to give raises to their head coaches. I don't think they go NFL route for the same reason that Saban is a nonstarter, there are a lot of rings to kiss at Austin. You could never run the UTx from within the head football coach's office. Also, they don't cheat in recruiting because they don't have to so they're not going to hire anyone with the taint of NCAA violations past or present.

Hmmm, not sure I completely agree with this. While Texas is a hotbed of high school football, Texas isn't the dominant power it once was in recruiting. Baylor, A&M, even TCU and Tech can give them a run for their money by enticing kids with starting positions and playing time. And even SEC schools are dipping more and more into Texas.

Kids went to Texas before because it was Texas and was the only school in the State worth going to for national attention. With the seasons they have been having as of late, they will have to get creative with recruiting in order to compete with the other programs.

Are you, in a backhand sort of way, saying anything about CBJ? Inquiring minds want to know!

I am, in a backhand way, saying something about all Division 1 FBS schools; and probably many of the FCS as well.

To think otherwise is pretty naive.

Here's Clay Travis' unofficial list, written obviously before Saban made his announcement:

Who Replaces Mack Brown at Texas? A Coaching Hot List : Outkick The Coverage

1. Nick Saban
2. David Shaw
3. Art Briles
4. Kevin Sumlin
5. James Franklin
6. Mike Gundy
7. Les Miles
8. Jim Mora
9. Charlie Strong
10. Jimbo Fisher
11. Gus Malzahn

12. Bobby Petrino

Just keep him away from the volleyball team and you'll win huge.

Loved the point made about Petrino. Not sure how many of those names would actually be in play though.

They get 99.9 percent of what they want in state. Texas is a big state with lots of great talent, enough to keep an entire conference sans Arkansas in business for a long time. There's plenty to go around but if Texas evaluates the talent accurately and develops it properly then there's no reason they don't factor into the national title picture regularly.

That, or you are desperately clinging to hope. One or the other.

I agree. An interesting tidbit... Saban's new contract has a buyout of...0. I still believe he'll be there. And yes, I am clinging to any hope I can find

I'll be that guy...

His contract has always had a zero buyout clause at Bama.
