Yeah. It's $8.55. Not $8.50.

1986 United States Minimum Wage in Today's Dollars

The difference is that you didn't have a bunch of socialists running the federal and state governments back in 1986. It was understood that a single person couldn't raise a family working a minimum wage job for life.

Note: We determine the value of a dollar using the Consumer Price Index from December of the previous year.

Well, we all know that the CPI is a corrupted calculation since the early 1990s...

Some republican should call their bluff and introduce a bill to raise it to $1000 per hour. Let the Democrats oppose or or else explain why they hate poor people.
It’s all Monopoly money anyhow to the left. Why NOT go all Weimar on the inflation ride?

When the next imminent recession/depression hits...which will be inevitable, especially with inflationary concerns...people will be taking a huge haircut on any job wage.

Not in nominal terms. Their "haircut" will come in the form of galloping inflation.

It will be double haircuts. People that need a job and inflation.

I bet the Feds prolong this to some Japanese scenario, but cannot see the outcome being some multi decade train brake. This end result is going to be massive or we are in for a long ride.

Oh, and I wouldn't be surprised that when inflation does get going hard enough, you will see them implement price controls and/or another round of direct cash payments...

But they cant do direct payments..or can they? The proverbial box.
Odds are the Feds unwind just in time for the next non Liberal president.

The day I got my license, I drove to work. Dad arranged that way, of course. Made $2/ hour delivering furniture and appliances on Saturdays. Didn't put more than $5 gas in the car so I could have some spending money on my hot dates. HA!

I don't think they have anything left in their trick bag that can drag this out like Japan under the current system. The current system will just crash and then they will come back with a central bank digital dollar. Then they will be able to rewind the clock. I think most of the people would be happy with that...
